The Hoop is the easiest manual brewer on the market that makes amazing coffee, but it has one frustrating design feature: it doesn't fit level on many mugs and carafes.

The Hoop Spacer is designed to make the Hoop fit on almost any mug or carafe. While no spacer or device can fit on every mug or carafe, the Hoop Spacer is a near-universal fix for unlevel Hoops.

Paper filters can be ordered here. Don't forget to add tasty coffee for your Hoop. You can also use our WB.coffee Aeopress filters, an Aeropress metal filter or try the Next Level 62mm filters for Hoop, as recommended by Scott Rao.

The FJ filter blend is a fantastic coffee for the Hoop, fruity, but not sour!

Tip from the CoffeeNose👃

zero bypass brewers

There has been lots of talk about zero bypass brewers. Basically it is nothing new. I tested the most popular models. I prefer the Hoop brewer compared to the tricolate. Tricolate is basically and aeropress style brewer with a melodrip/gabi B style, low agitation, water dispensor on top. The gabi-A, with basket filter is a better alternative. I mostly use the aeropress as a drip, rather than pressure brewer. If you do a proper wetting and apply enough agitation + break the crust on the top it is a zero bypass brewer.

The technique of applying agitation and breaking the crust is essential to avoid underextracted coffee. I often consider a coffee also underextracted if the EY falls within the standard, but there is more sweetness to be extracted

The big disadvantage of the Hoop and Tricolate is that they are plastic. Even for BPA free I am rather save than sorry. Microplastics find their way into human brains and the combination of heat and oil are high risk for plastic migration into your coffee.

There are (almost) plastic free zero bypass brewers

  • the new plastic free aeropress
  • the hario switch (with the right technique)
  • the glass clever dripper
  • weber workshops - the bird
  • Melodrip Colum Mini Dripper
  • Chemex style flat glass brewers

Are you interested to try zero bypass brewers and learn all about extracting more sweetness? Join a workshop or masterclass @ Amsterdam Coffee Lab and #extractmorewiththecoffeenose or make an appointment to try before you buy.

Plastic Free Coffee

brewing devices / methods

With more and more news of micoplastics found everywhere including inside human brains you might want to avoid plastic. Plastic is migrating in oil and heating "food safe" plastic is not a good idea. Wether it is called Tritan or Polycarbonate it is an oil (pertoleum) derivate. BPA free doesn't mean healthy. Brewing plastic free coffee is a smart idea.

Which brewing devices/methods are suitable for plastic free coffee brewing

Why we do not include the espresso machine in this list? Many (prosumer) machine have a plastic water container and/or plastic water hoses. Due to the long water contact time and heat we consider it a low risk for microplastic migration.

This is of course the same for water filters and hoses. Due to the absence of heat we consider this a lower risk.

Do you miss a plastic free brewing device in this list or do you have questions or something to add? Please do reach out so we can make this list complete.
