Baratza M2 burr

original baratza quality

Baratza M3 Conical Burr – 40 mm Steel – Encore / Virtuoso+

⚙️ Genuine Baratza Replacement Burr – Keep Your Grinder Grinding

The Baratza M3 Conical Burr is the genuine replacement central cone burr for compatible classic Baratza conical-burr grinders.

Made from precision-machined steel, this 40 mm conical burr works together with the outer ring burr to grind coffee from coarse immersion settings through fine filter ranges.

It is particularly relevant for the classic:

Baratza Encore

and is also officially compatible with:

Virtuoso+

🔧 Selected discontinued Baratza conical-burr grinders.

Baratza part number: SP0101074.

Rather than replacing an otherwise perfectly functional grinder because a burr is damaged or worn:

repair it.

Clean it.

Replace the component.

Keep making coffee. ♻️☕

⚙️ 40 mm Conical Grinding System

Baratza's classic conical-burr grinders use a 40 mm steel burr architecture designed for balanced, sweet coffee across a wide grind range. Baratza describes the broad upper auger blades as pulling and pre-cutting the beans before they reach the finer cutting surfaces lower down.

The system consists of two main cutting components:

⚙️ Central Cone Burr

This M3 burr.

and

⭕ Outer Ring Burr

The stationary burr surrounding it.

The distance between those two surfaces determines the grind size.

Both need to be correctly installed and in good condition for the grinder to perform properly.

☕ Excellent for Filter Coffee

The classic Encore with its M3 burr is especially popular as an accessible filter-coffee grinder.

Baratza gives the current Encore:

40 grind settings

covering a broad range from fine coffee through coarse cold-brew grinding.

Perfect for methods such as:

💧 Hario V60

🔀 Hario Switch

☕ Moccamaster

🌀 AeroPress

🚀 NextLevel Pulsar

🫙 French press

🧊 Cold brew

For demanding unpressurised espresso, we would normally recommend a grinder with finer adjustment resolution such as the Encore ESP or a dedicated espresso grinder.

🔩 Important – M3 Uses the Classic Threaded Mount

This M3 burr belongs to Baratza's traditional conical-burr architecture.

It should not be confused with the:

M2 Quick-Release Cone Burr

used by the:

☕ Encore ESP

☕ Encore ESP Pro.

The ESP generation uses a completely different Quick-Release mounting system. Baratza explicitly states that its M2 Quick-Release burr is compatible only with Encore ESP and Encore ESP Pro.

🆚 M3 vs M2 – Which Burr Do I Need?

There are several Baratza burrs with very similar names, so check carefully before ordering.

Baratza currently lists both the M3 and threaded M2 as compatible with the classic Encore and Virtuoso+, while the Quick-Release M2 belongs exclusively to the ESP platform.

⚙️ M3 or M2 Upgrade for an Encore?

If you're simply restoring a classic Encore to its original-style grinding configuration:

choose the M3.

Baratza lists the M3 directly among the current replacement parts for the Encore.

Want to change to the M2 geometry instead?

Baratza also sells the threaded M2 SP0101069, which is officially compatible with the Encore and Virtuoso+.

The M2 is also the burr geometry used in the current Virtuoso+ platform.

👃 CoffeeNose advice

If the existing M3 is damaged and you simply want the grinder back to its familiar performance:

replace M3 with M3.

If you're already opening the grinder and considering a different burr geometry, the threaded M2 can be worth considering.

Do not confuse either of them with the Quick-Release M2 for Encore ESP.

⭕ Check the Ring Burr Too

The central cone burr is only half of the grinding system.

Inspect the surrounding:

ring burr + holder

at the same time.

For the classic Encore / Virtuoso+ platform, Baratza currently offers:

Ring Burr Holder

SP0101174

This is the holder without a ring burr. It is officially listed for Encore ZCG485/ZCG484, Virtuoso+ ZCG587 and selected discontinued models.

Ring Burr + Holder

SP0100801

A complete replacement assembly containing both components.

⚠️ Do Not Order Encore ESP Ring Parts

The Encore ESP uses a different ring-burr holder architecture.

So:

Classic Encore

✅ SP0101174-style classic holder

Encore ESP

❌ Different holder

Encore ESP Pro

❌ Different again

The word Encore in the product title is not enough to establish compatibility.

Always check whether you own:

Encore

or

Encore ESP

or

Encore ESP Pro.

They are different grinders internally.

🔧 When Should You Replace an M3 Burr?

Steel burrs are durable.

Do not automatically replace them just because the grinder is several years old.

Consider replacing the cone when you find:

⚠️ Chipped cutting surfaces

🪨 Damage from a foreign object

🔧 Significant mechanical damage

⚙️ Clearly deteriorated grinding performance after eliminating other causes

Before blaming the burr, inspect:

⭕ Ring-burr holder

⚙️ Ring burr

🌀 Paddle wheel

💨 Grounds chute

🧼 Burr chamber

🔩 Adjustment mechanism

A surprisingly large number of “bad burr” problems are actually:

dirty grinder problems

or

broken burr-holder problems.

👃 Diagnose Before Replacing Parts

If your Baratza suddenly:

🐌 Grinds extremely slowly

🌪️ Retains much more coffee

⚙️ Produces inconsistent grounds

👂 Makes an abnormal noise

💨 Stops moving coffee through the chute

don't immediately buy every spare part in the diagram.

Start by cleaning and inspecting the grinder.

A damaged €5 holder can change alignment dramatically.

A blocked chute can make perfectly healthy burrs appear ineffective.

WB.coffee can help.

🧼 Clean the Grinder While It's Open

Replacing a burr is the ideal opportunity to remove accumulated:

☕ Coffee fines

🟤 Coffee oils

🫘 Bean fragments

🌪️ Dust

from the accessible grinding chamber.

A freshly installed burr inside several years of old coffee residue is not our idea of a complete service.

🧼 Cross-Sell – Professional Grinder Cleaner

Use a proper professional grinder cleaner periodically to help remove coffee residue and oils from the grinding system.

Especially useful when grinding:

🍫 Darker coffee

🫘 Oily beans

☕ Larger quantities

Fresh coffee through a clean grinder tastes much better than fresh coffee carrying residues of several months of old beans with it.

💨 Cross-Sell – Grinder Bellows / Blower

A bellows blower is ideal for moving loose coffee particles out of:

⚙️ Burr chamber

💨 Exit chute

🫘 Grind pathway

before and after maintenance.

It is also a useful everyday accessory for reducing loose grounds inside the grinder.

Remember:

Air removes loose particles.

It does not remove oily deposits.

Use brushing and deeper cleaning where needed.

🧹 Cross-Sell – Rhino Grinder Bench Brush

A proper grinder brush should live next to the grinder.

Use it for:

🧹 Loose grounds

⚙️ Burr-area cleaning

⚖️ Dosing station

☕ Countertop

Cleaning for ten seconds regularly is much easier than performing an archaeological excavation once a year.

🥤 Cross-Sell – Rhino Dosing Cup

Prefer a cleaner workflow?

Grind into a dosing cup and then transfer the grounds to your brewer or portafilter.

Particularly useful when:

⚖️ Weighing individual doses

🫘 Single dosing

🌀 Using AeroPress

☕ Preparing smaller batches

⚠️ Food-Grade Lubricant

Food-grade silicone grease can be useful for certain grinder and coffee-equipment service operations.

But:

❌ Never grease the burr cutting surfaces.

Do not put silicone lubricant on:

⚙️ M3 cutting teeth

⭕ Ring-burr cutting surfaces

☕ Any surface designed to directly grind coffee

Grease collects grounds and can contaminate the coffee.

Use lubricant only where the relevant repair procedure actually calls for it.

When in doubt:

♻️ Why We Like Baratza Spare Parts

Baratza says the classic Encore's components are designed around long-term home use and specifically promotes the availability of replacement parts and repair information when something eventually needs attention.

That's how coffee equipment should work.

A grinder contains components that wear.

A broken part should not automatically turn the complete appliance into electronic waste.

Replace:

⚙️ Burr

⭕ Holder

and keep making coffee.

☕ Add Something Tasty to Your Parts Order

🍫 Chocolate

☕ Brewing accessories

You get something delicious.

🫘 What Should You Grind with a Fresh M3?

🍓 FJ – Fruity & Juicy

A smooth, fruit-forward everyday coffee.

Great for:

💧 V60

🔀 Switch

🌀 AeroPress

☕ Moccamaster

🌸 FF – Fruity & Floral

For:

🌸 Aromatics

✨ Clarity

🍑 Delicate fruit

especially enjoyable as filter coffee.

🍫 FC – Fruity & Chocolaty

A balanced option when you want:

🍫 Familiar sweetness

+

🍓 Fruit

in the same cup.

🌍 Single Origins

A clean, correctly aligned burr set also lets you hear more clearly what different coffees are doing.

Explore current WB.coffee coffees from origins such as:

🇪🇹 Ethiopia

🇰🇪 Kenya

🇬🇹 Guatemala

🇨🇴 Colombia

🇸🇻 El Salvador

🇾🇪 Yemen

and compare processing, origin and roast rather than drinking the taste of yesterday's grinder residue.

👃 CoffeeNose Tip – After Installing the New Burr

Once everything is correctly assembled:

1. Check that the burr is seated correctly

Do not force adjustment components into place.

2. Start relatively coarse

Make sure the grinder runs normally before pushing towards finer settings.

3. Grind a small amount of coffee

Listen for:

✅ Normal motor sound

✅ Consistent bean feeding

✅ Normal grounds output

4. Dial in again

Do not assume your old grind number will behave identically after replacing burrs or alignment components.

For filter:

⚙️ Adjust grind

💧 Keep dose and water constant

👅 Taste

Too fast, weak, sour?

Try finer.

Too slow, dry or bitter?

Try coarser.

❤️ Why We Like It at WB.coffee

The most interesting feature of an M3 burr isn't really the burr itself.

It's the fact that you can buy one.

Your Encore can be years old.

One component can become damaged.

And instead of buying an entirely new grinder, you can order the part, open the machine and repair it.

That matters.

We like equipment that can be:

🧼 Cleaned

🔧 Repaired

⚙️ Maintained

♻️ Kept in service

And we like manufacturers that make exploded diagrams and replacement components available rather than treating a coffee grinder like a disposable kitchen appliance.

Our job at WB.coffee isn't simply to sell you the part.

We can also help determine:

whether you actually need it.

Sometimes you need an M3.

Sometimes you need an M2.

Sometimes it's only the burr holder.

And sometimes the grinder just desperately needs cleaning.

CoffeeNose verdict 👃

Fix the right problem with the right part.

Then put some freshly roasted coffee through it.

That's much more satisfying than throwing away a perfectly repairable grinder.

💡Tip from the CoffeeNose👃

The M3 burr is actually the conical burr set from the Baratza Virtuoso+ grinder. It has a slightly different geometry and is made from a different steel alloy than the M2. The M2 is the original burr that comes with the Encore

The M3 burr produces a much more consistent grind, especially at the finer settings. It is designed to be more precise and to create fewer fines (very small coffee particles).

Because of its more precise grind I recommend for Encore owners who want to improve the quality of their coffee, particularly for pour-over, Aeropress, or even entry-level espresso, to upgrade to the M3 burr.
