Tip from the CoffeeNose👃
Puck filters are great to make your extraction more even and assist with an equal pre-infusion. Also keep your showerscreen more clean so that you can save on water and electricity by flushing less. Especially for the home barista where daily backflushing is not feasable due to the low volume of shots.
Adjust your grind size and puck preparation to fine tune (dial in) your espresso shot. Use multiple paper filters and or together with a metal puck screen to find your favorite way of brewing.
Especially with 57mm single dose basket and 9-11gr coffee a puck screen can greatly improve extraction for light & medium roast specialty coffee. For 58mm single dose basket you can use up to 14gr.
You can flush paper filters directly after use and reuse a couple of times.
You can also experiment with a paper filter on the bottom of your portafilter. This will reduce the amount of oils (cafestol) in your espresso and will create extra pressure (like a pressure basket). This can be usefull with ultra light roasts, older coffee, pre-ground coffee and/or a grinder that cannot grind finer.
For metal puck screen filters we also reccomend to flush them diretly after use with hot water, the same way you rinse your portafilter basket. It is essential to wash the regularly with a coffee oil cleaner and include them in your backflush and deep cleaning showerscreen routine.
