What grind size for Aeropress?
Here’s the detailed breakdown for AeroPress grind size, depending on your brew style and filter type 👇
☕ General Rule of Thumb
AeroPress works best with a grind size between medium and medium-fine — roughly the texture of table salt or slightly finer than for drip coffee.
The grind size you choose depends on brew time, pressure, and filter type:
1️⃣ Standard AeroPress (Paper Filter)
- Grind size: Medium-fine (like fine sand or table salt)
- Why: The paper filter catches fine particles, so you can grind finer for more sweetness and clarity.
- Taste: Clean, bright, silky cup with smooth mouthfeel
- Brew time: 2½–3½ minutes
2️⃣ Metal Filter (Stainless or Gold)
- Grind size: Medium to medium-coarse (closer to sea salt)
- Why: The metal filter allows more oils and micro-particles through, so you’ll want a slightly coarser grind to avoid muddiness.
- Taste: Fuller-bodied, richer, more aromatic brew
- Brew time: 2–5 minutes
3️⃣ Flow Control / Prismo (Full Immersion)
- Grind size: Medium (in between espresso and filter)
- Why: You’re letting the coffee steep before pressing, so the extraction needs balance — not too fine, not too coarse.
- Taste: Round, syrupy, intense
- Steep time: 2–5 minutes depending on desired strength
4️⃣ AeroPress Go (Travel)
- Grind size: Medium-fine
- Why: Slightly shorter steep time and smaller brew volume benefit from a finer grind.
- Taste: Balanced, smooth, consistent even in less controlled environments.
5️⃣ AeroPress XL (Sharing)
- Grind size: Medium
- Why: Larger brew volume (600 ml) means more extraction time — you need a slightly coarser grind for even flow and clarity.
- Taste: Clean, balanced, ideal for sharing multiple cups
👃 CoffeeNose Tip
- If pressing feels too easy → grind finer.
- If pressing feels too hard or tastes bitter → grind coarser.
- AeroPress is forgiving — you can always adjust water temperature (86–98 °C) and brew time to fine-tune flavor balance.
Brewing Concentrates or Espresso-Style AeroPress Coffee
When you’re brewing a stronger, more concentrated cup to dilute later (like an Americano, iced coffee, or milk drink), or if you want that espresso-style intensity — grind finer than usual.
-
🔹 Why finer?
A finer grind increases the surface area of the coffee particles, allowing faster extraction and richer flavor within a smaller water volume. This gives your brew the sweetness, depth, and intensity of espresso — without a machine. -
🔹 How fine?
Somewhere between espresso and medium-fine (like fine table salt).
It should resist the plunger slightly but still allow a steady press in about 20–30 seconds. -
🔹 Recommended ratio:
Use 18 g of coffee to 150–180 ml of water at 93–95 °C.
Brew for about 1–1½ minutes, then press gently.
The result is a rich, syrupy coffee concentrate. -
🔹 Dilute to taste:
Add equal parts hot water for an Americano-style cup, or steamed milk for a quick on-the-go flat white.
Why it’s perfect for AeroPress Go
The AeroPress Go is made for travel — so brewing a strong concentrate makes sharing easy.
You can pour your concentrate into another mug, dilute with hot water (from a thermos), or even make two balanced cups from one brew.
It’s simple, compact, and forgiving — exactly what you need when making coffee on the road or outdoors.
