ECM Mechanika MAX II – BTC Heat Exchanger with Rotary Pump

☕ The Heat Exchanger, Re-Engineered

The ECM Mechanika MAX II takes the convenience and steam power of a traditional heat-exchanger espresso machine and addresses one of the classic HX compromises:

temperature management.

ECM combines an advanced one-way heat-exchanger system, its BTC – Brew Temperature Control system, and an actively heated brew group to reduce thermal fluctuations and deliver much more precise control over brewing temperature.

Add:

🌡️ 90–95°C adjustable brew temperature

Approximately 12-minute heat-up

🔄 Rotary pump

💧 Tank or direct-water connection

🫧 Programmable active & passive pre-infusion

🔥 Three selectable steam-power levels

📱 OLED display

Two automatic on/off times per day

🧼 Cleaning and filter reminders

and the Mechanika MAX II becomes a particularly interesting choice for the home barista who wants strong espresso and milk performance without moving to a larger dual-boiler platform.

📋 Quick Menu

🌡️ BTC – Brew Temperature Control

A Smarter Approach to the Heat Exchanger

Classic HX machines are fantastic for simultaneously preparing:

☕ Espresso

+

🥛 Steamed milk

but traditionally require more understanding of temperature management than a dual-boiler machine.

The Mechanika MAX II takes a more controlled approach.

Its integrated BTC system lets you select brewing temperatures between:

90°C and 95°C

in precise steps, while ECM's redesigned one-way HX system is intended to reduce thermal fluctuations between extractions.

That means you can adapt the machine more deliberately to different coffees.

🍫 Chocolate-driven espresso blend

Start around:

91–92°C

🍓 Medium / modern espresso

Try:

92–94°C

🌸 Light-roasted single origins

Explore:

94–95°C

These are starting points.

Your tongue makes the final decision.

🔥 Actively Heated Brew Group

This is one of the most significant changes in the MAX II.

ECM added heating cartridges directly to the brew group, allowing the group to reach and maintain operating temperature faster and more predictably.

This contributes to:

⚡ Faster warm-up

🌡️ More stable group temperature

☕ Better consistency between shots

🔄 Reduced dependence on passive thermosyphon heating alone

ECM states that the MAX II is ready to brew in approximately:

12 minutes

and says this is roughly half the warm-up time of its predecessor.

For a traditional-looking prosumer machine with a substantial 2-litre HX boiler, that is impressive.

👃 CoffeeNose – Why Group Temperature Matters

Your boiler temperature is only part of the story.

Before brewing water ever reaches the coffee, it passes through:

🔥 Boiler architecture

🔩 Metal plumbing

☕ The brew group

🔩 Portafilter

🫘 Coffee puck

If the heavy group itself is significantly colder than the rest of the system, it absorbs heat from your brewing water.

Heating the group directly gives ECM another way to stabilise the thermal system instead of relying only on time and passive circulation.

That matters when you want:

shot 3

to behave like:

shot 1.

🔄 One-Way HX System

ECM specifically highlights the MAX II's new one-way heat-exchanger architecture as a means of reducing temperature fluctuations.

The objective is to preserve the main reason people buy an HX machine:

☕ Brew espresso and steam milk without waiting.

while delivering much tighter control over the brewing side.

ECM itself says the result moves the MAX II closer in several respects to dual-boiler performance while retaining the efficiency and flexibility of an HX machine.

🆚 Why Choose an HX Instead of a Dual Boiler?

A dual boiler gives brew and steam their own completely separate boilers.

That's technically elegant.

But not everybody needs one.

A well-designed HX can offer:

🥛 Excellent steam power

☕ Simultaneous brewing and steaming

🔥 Less total boiler hardware

📐 More compact dimensions

💶 A potentially more efficient overall system

The Mechanika MAX II is particularly compelling because ECM has put serious engineering effort into addressing temperature stability, traditionally the main reason enthusiasts move away from HX machines.

🫧 Programmable Pre-Infusion

The OLED menu allows you to configure both active and passive pre-infusion timing.

This gives you more control over the first phase of extraction.

A gentler start can be particularly interesting with:

🌸 Light roast

🫘 Very fresh coffee

⚙️ Fine grind settings

🧺 Precision baskets

💎 Dense high-altitude coffees

During pre-infusion you are trying to:

💧 Saturate the puck

🫧 Allow trapped gas to escape

🌀 Reduce dry spots

☕ Prepare the coffee bed for full extraction

👃 CoffeeNose Tip – Don't Overcomplicate Pre-Infusion

Start simple.

For a new coffee:

  1. Dial in grind.
  2. Fix your dose.
  3. Set a sensible yield.
  4. Taste.

Only then start changing pre-infusion.

If you change:

⚙️ Grind

+

🌡️ Temperature

+

💧 Pre-infusion

+

⚖️ Dose

at the same time, you have no idea which adjustment improved—or ruined—the espresso.

Use the MAX II's extra controls as tools.

Not as obligations.

🔄 Rotary Pump

The Mechanika MAX II uses a rotary pump, rather than the vibration pump found in many smaller domestic machines.

That provides a more refined operating character and, crucially, allows the machine to work with either:

💧 Its internal water tank

or

🚰 A permanent water connection.

For a fixed home installation, that is a major convenience upgrade.

🚰 Tank or Direct Water Connection

Use the machine with its approximately:

3 litre internal reservoir

or connect it directly to your water supply. ECM includes the metal connection hose required for a direct-water installation.

Tank mode

Ideal when:

🏠 You rent

📍 The machine may move

🔧 Plumbing isn't available

Plumbed-in mode

Ideal when:

☕ You prepare several drinks daily

💧 You don't want to refill tanks

🏠 You are creating a permanent coffee station

🧼 You want a more professional workflow

🔧 Installation in the Netherlands by WB.coffee

For customers in the Netherlands, WB.coffee can also help install compatible espresso machines at home.

For a fixed-water Mechanika MAX II setup this can include, depending on the installation:

💧 Water connection

⬇️ Drainage planning where required

🛡️ Water filtration

🔧 Machine installation

⚙️ Grinder setup

☕ Initial espresso calibration

Contact us before ordering if you want the complete setup installed.

A plumbed espresso machine should be planned as a complete water system—not simply attached to the nearest tap.

💧 Water Treatment Is Essential

The machine includes a water-filter set and ECM's software provides a filter-replacement reminder.

Proper water treatment matters for:

☕ Flavour

🪨 Scale prevention

🔧 Valve life

🔥 Boiler health

💧 Flow reliability

Using water outside the appropriate specification or neglecting required maintenance can cause damage that is not regarded as a manufacturing defect.

For a permanent installation we strongly recommend choosing water treatment according to:

💧 Local hardness

⚗️ Alkalinity

🧂 Chloride

☕ Daily consumption

rather than buying a random filter based only on price.

WB.coffee can help specify the appropriate system.

🔥 Three Steam Settings

The Mechanika MAX II lets you choose between three steam-temperature settings:

Low

124°C

Medium

127°C

High

130°C

These are controlled through the PID system.

This is more useful than simply having:

lots of steam.

Different users want different behaviour.

Low

Good for:

👨‍🎓 Learning

🥛 Smaller pitchers

🎨 More time to texture

Medium

A versatile everyday setting.

High

Useful for:

🔥 Faster steaming

🥛 Larger pitchers

☕ Multiple cappuccinos

🥛 Lever Valve Technology

The MAX II uses ECM's lever-style steam and hot-water valves.

Instead of repeatedly turning conventional rotary knobs, you operate the valve with a quick lever movement.

This creates a fast, direct workflow for:

🥛 Milk steaming

💧 Hot water

🧼 Purging

Especially when preparing several drinks consecutively.

📱 OLED Display

The discreet OLED display gives access to the machine's more advanced functions without dominating the classic ECM appearance.

Available settings include:

🌡️ Brewing temperatures

🫧 Active pre-infusion

💧 Passive pre-infusion

🔥 Steam level

🌱 ECO mode

🧼 Cleaning reminder

💧 Filter reminder

⏰ Automatic switching schedules

🌡️ °C / °F

⚙️ Temperature offset

This is exactly how we prefer electronics on a traditional espresso machine:

useful when you need them,

unobtrusive when you don't.

⏰ Two Automatic On / Off Times Per Day

The MAX II allows two programmable automatic switching times per day.

For example:

🌅 Morning

Ready before breakfast.

🕒 Afternoon

Ready again after lunch.

Combined with the approximately 12-minute heat-up, this makes the machine much easier to integrate into normal daily life than traditional prosumer machines that needed to remain hot for long periods before use.

🧼 Cleaning & Filter Reminders

The software includes:

CLn

Reminder for the next brew-group cleaning.

FL

Reminder for filter replacement.

These are simple features, but useful ones.

Maintenance is easy to postpone when the machine still appears to work normally.

Unfortunately, coffee oil and scale don't usually send you a polite warning before they become expensive.

📈 Dual Pressure Gauges

The front of the MAX II displays both:

📈 Pump pressure

and

🔥 Boiler pressure.

This gives you direct feedback about both espresso extraction and steam-system behaviour.

Remember

A pump gauge showing around 9 bar does not automatically prove the espresso is good.

Use it together with:

⚖️ Dose

💧 Yield

⏱️ Time

👀 Flow

👅 Taste

Pressure is information.

Taste is the objective.

📐 Compact for a Rotary-Pump HX

Despite the internal rotary pump and 2 litre stainless-steel HX boiler, the machine measures approximately:

27.5 × 44.5 × 40.5 cm

without the portafilter and weighs around:

23.5 kg.

That makes the MAX II particularly interesting when you want:

🔄 Rotary pump

🚰 Fixed water capability

🥛 Strong steam performance

☕ Serious espresso

but do not want the footprint of a larger dual-boiler machine.

📖 User manual

⚖️ Dosing Cup

For a clean espresso workflow, we particularly like using a dosing cup.

Grind your coffee directly into the cup.

Then:

  1. ⚖️ Check your dose.
  2. 🫘 Transfer into the basket.
  3. 🌀 Distribute with WDT.
  4. 🔘 Tamp.
  5. 🧲 Add a puck screen if desired.
  6. ☕ Brew.

A dosing cup is particularly useful with:

⚖️ Single-dose grinders

🌬️ Low-retention grinders

🫘 RDT workflows

☕ Bottomless portafilters

It keeps the weighing and grinding workflow clean without adding another accessory around the top of the portafilter.

🌀 WDT & Precision Puck Preparation

The MAX II can deliver very stable brewing conditions.

Your puck still has to cooperate.

Useful tools include:

⚖️ Dosing cup

🌀 WDT tool

🔘 Precision tamper

🧺 IMS / VST precision basket

🪞 Bottomless portafilter

🧲 Magnetic 58.5 mm puck screen

⚖️ Espresso scale

Think of the sequence:

Grinder → dosing cup → basket → WDT → tamp → puck screen → extraction.

A stable machine makes inconsistent puck preparation easier to see—not less important.

🧲 Magnetic Puck Screen 58.5 mm

Our thin 0.2 mm magnetic puck screen is a particularly useful companion for a traditional exposed shower-screen group.

It can help:

💧 Spread initial water

🫧 Support uniform pre-infusion

🧼 Keep the shower screen cleaner

♻️ Reduce unnecessary flushing

And the magnet makes removal much easier:

🧲 Lift it out before knocking the puck away.

No burned fingers.

No screen disappearing into the knock box.

⚙️ Cross-Sell – ECM Exacto Grind-by-Weight

The current ECM Exacto is a natural aesthetic and technical pairing with the MAX II.

ECM positions it as a Grind-by-Weight grinder with 64 mm burrs, stepless adjustment and a high-resolution touch display.

Weight-based grinding gives you a much more repeatable starting point:

🌰 Coffee Pairing – CN Chocolaty & Nutty

For a sweet, forgiving everyday espresso:

CN – Chocolaty & Nutty

One of our popular HoReCa blends, with a flavour direction of:

🍫 Milk chocolate

🌰 Nuts

🍮 Caramel

🍯 Brown sugar

🍰 Fudge

Fantastic as:

☕ Espresso

🥛 Cappuccino

🤎 Flat white

The powerful steam system of the MAX II makes this a particularly satisfying milk-drink combination.

🍮 VC – Vanilla & Caramel

For an even softer profile:

VC – Vanilla & Caramel

Expect:

🌼 Vanilla

🍮 Caramel

🍯 Sweetness

☕ Smooth espresso

🥛 Excellent milk compatibility

🍓 FJ – Fruity & Juicy

Want to use the BTC temperature control more actively?

Try:

🍓 FJ – Fruity & Juicy

Then experiment with:

🌡️ 92°C

🌡️ 93°C

🌡️ 94°C

while keeping everything else as consistent as possible.

Taste what actually changes.

That is where precise temperature adjustment starts becoming useful rather than merely another number on the display.

🌍 Single-Origin Espresso

The 90–95°C temperature range and programmable pre-infusion make the MAX II an interesting platform for modern espresso.

Ask us for a current recommendation or explore coffees such as:

🍓 Kenya Currant Crush

🌸 Ethiopia Guji Dimtu

💎 Guatemala Geisha – Finca Inferno

🔧 A Major WB.coffee USP – Maintenance, Repairs & Upgrades

Buying a serious espresso machine should not end when the delivery box arrives.

WB.coffee can continue supporting your ECM after the sale.

We can help with:

🧼 Preventive Maintenance

Regular inspection and replacement of normal wear components where required, including areas such as:

⭕ Group seals

🚿 Shower screens

🔧 Valves

💧 Water components

🧼 Group cleaning

🔧 Repairs

If something eventually fails, we prefer:

diagnose → repair → continue using

rather than:

replace the whole machine.

Depending on the issue, service can involve components such as:

💧 Pumps

📈 Pressure gauges

🔥 Heating components

🔧 Valves

⚡ Electrical parts

💧 Hydraulic connections

⚙️ Upgrades

We can also help improve your machine and espresso workflow with carefully chosen upgrades such as:

🧺 Precision baskets

🪞 Bottomless portafilters

🧲 Magnetic puck screens

🌪️ Alternative steam tips

🔘 Precision tampers

⚖️ Dosing cups and scales

💧 Better water-treatment systems

Not every upgrade makes better coffee.

We recommend the ones that make sense for your machine, workflow and coffee.

♻️ Why Repairability Matters

A premium prosumer espresso machine should be a long-term appliance.

Boilers, pumps, seals, valves and gauges are serviceable components.

Something wearing out after years of use should not mean throwing the entire machine away.

That is a major reason we like supplying machines in this category.

You are buying equipment that can be:

🧼 Maintained

🔧 Repaired

⚙️ Upgraded

♻️ Kept in service

for a long time when looked after properly.

❤️ Why Buy Your ECM from WB.coffee?

Price is only one part of buying a machine like the Mechanika MAX II.

At WB.coffee, the objective is to make the complete espresso setup work.

👃 Sensory advice

We are focused on specialty coffee rather than simply moving boxes.

That means we can help answer questions such as:

Which grinder actually belongs next to this machine?

Which water filter do I need in Weesp versus another region?

Which basket and dose work for my coffee?

Should I change steam tips—or improve my technique first?

Is the machine faulty, or is the espresso simply dialled in badly?

Is an upgrade worthwhile?

That's where specialist support becomes valuable.

❤️ Why We Like the Mechanika MAX II at WB.coffee

The original Mechanika MAX was already an unusually intelligent HX machine.

The MAX II addresses the part we care about most:

thermal behaviour.

The combination of:

🌡️ BTC

🔄 One-way HX

🔥 Heated brew group

⚡ 12-minute warm-up

🫧 Programmable pre-infusion

🔄 Rotary pump

makes the machine substantially more sophisticated without destroying what made the Mechanika attractive in the first place. ECM says the new heated group cuts warm-up roughly in half compared with the predecessor and that the revised architecture improves stability across consecutive extractions.

It is still:

✨ Classic ECM

📐 Relatively compact

🥛 Powerful with milk

☕ Tactile to operate

🔧 Built like a real espresso machine

but the electronics underneath now solve more of the irritating HX compromises for you.

CoffeeNose verdict 👃

If you mostly prepare:

☕ espresso

+

🥛 cappuccino / flat white

and don't actually need independently adjustable brew and steam boilers, the MAX II deserves serious consideration before automatically buying a dual boiler.

Spend the difference intelligently:

⚙️ a better grinder,

💧 proper water

🫘 better coffee.

🎓 better technique

and make sure the machine is properly maintained.

That's a much better recipe for excellent espresso than simply choosing the largest machine you can fit on the counter.

Important Ordering, Warranty & Service Information

🎨 Custom RAL Colours

Want your espresso machine in a colour that matches your kitchen, interior or company branding?

WB.coffee can arrange professional spray painting in virtually any RAL colour for an additional fee.

Custom colours are made to order and therefore require additional preparation and delivery time. Contact us with your preferred RAL code for a quotation before ordering.

📦 Colour Availability & Payment

Not every standard factory colour is always available for immediate shipment.

Stock and delivery times can change, particularly for less common colours and special editions.

Please do not make a bank transfer until your order has been completed and we have confirmed the configuration, colour, availability and final price.

If your preferred colour is temporarily unavailable, we can discuss:

  • Another factory colour
  • Expected delivery time
  • A custom RAL finish
  • Alternative configurations

💧 Water Filtration & Maintenance Are Essential

Professional espresso equipment requires proper water treatment and regular maintenance.

Using water outside the manufacturer's specifications can cause:

  • Scale build-up
  • Corrosion
  • Restricted flow
  • Boiler and valve damage
  • Reduced temperature stability
  • Expensive repairs

A suitable water filter or water-treatment system must therefore be installed and maintained, and the espresso machine must receive the prescribed regular cleaning and maintenance.

Correct water treatment and maintenance are also important for maintaining warranty coverage. Damage caused by unsuitable water, scale, neglected cleaning or insufficient maintenance may fall outside the manufacturer's warranty conditions.

WB.coffee can help select the correct filtration solution based on your local water quality and expected consumption.

For higher-volume installations, we can also advise on larger-capacity filtration systems with a lower cost per litre and less cartridge waste.

❤️ Why Buy Your Espresso Machine from WB.coffee?

If your only objective is to find the lowest advertised price somewhere on the internet, we may not always be the right supplier.

We believe buying a serious espresso machine is about much more than the box it arrives in.

Installation requirements and pricing depend on the machine, existing plumbing and location, so please contact us for a quotation.

👃 The WB.coffee Approach

We would rather help you build the right coffee setup than simply sell you the most expensive machine.

The espresso machine is only one part of the system:

water → grinder → coffee → puck preparation → machine → maintenance → barista → cup

Get those elements working together and an excellent machine becomes an excellent coffee experience.

That combination of service, knowledge, specialty coffee and long-term support is what you are buying when you choose WB.coffee.

we help you make the right choice

Your eye is often caugth by the beauty of a machine. How will it look in my kitchen? Of course esthetics are important and many great machines come in different customization (colors, wood, chrome, copper, etc). The machine must howerver, first and foremoste, suit your needs!

Questions we will ask you:

  • How do you currently make coffee?
  • How many coffees do you want to make?
  • What kind of coffees do you drink (with or without milk)
  • Do you alreayd have a grinder?
  • How much space do you have on your (kitchen) counter?
  • What price category are you looking at?
  • What beans do you (intend to) use?

Sustainability

A machine with a well insulated boiler in the right size/capacity will heat up fast, whilst using minimal energy. Size matters and it all depends on your drinking habits.

Repairability

Not all brands are build for repairs. Are spare parts available? Is support available?

Upgrades

With our tasty specialty coffee beans you are likely to get addicted. Maybe you will want to extract more flavor and upgrade your shower screen, portafilter basket, maybe even a naked portafilter? Pressure profiling, shot timer, pressure gauge. Many brands and machines are suitable for (custom) upgrades.

Some brands are on purpose not suitable for universal parts and tools, so they can sell their own overpriced parts instead.

Health

Lower end, cheaper machines often use plastic parts. With PFAS and microplastics this is not such a good idea. Oils and heat let plastic migrate into your drink. With some brands this is also the case with their more expensive machines from around 1000 euro!

Let us guide you whilst tasting how great coffee should be!

Add-on products

save more!

An espresso machine is just one essential part you need to brew great espresso at home. To get a proper start you need:

  • espresso grinder
  • Good, fresh beans (you won't find those in the supermarket!)
  • proper tamper (often a bad to mediocre one is added by the manufactorer)
  • tamping mat
  • espresso scale
  • blind filter grouphead brush (often a bad to mediocre one is added by the manufactorer - you will burn your hands with those!)
  • coffee oil cleaner

Optional but recommended

  • barista workshop / course
  • dosing cup
  • shot glass
  • milk pitcher(s)
  • milk cleaner
  • puck screen
  • levelling tool

There are a lot of extra tools and upgrades we can reccomend, you can every time treat yourself to a gadget when ordering coffee! Don't feel shy to ask for reccomendations. Of course you can go and try and find all these items seperately in some vague online store or big e-commerce platform. Big chance you will end up with some chinese knock-off and get 10 seperate packages. Not very sustainable and not very economical.

Just add coffee and gadgets you want to your cart and we can apply discount for you. Just select bank transfer as payment option and we can manually apply discount and make you a non-binding offer.

We do offer best price guarantee for most brands and products.

Every product has been carefully curated by the CoffeeNose 👃!

E61 machine maintenance & repairs

when you can use a bit of help

Don't have the right tools? No time? No experience? Looking for an upgrade

No problem. Your E61 is build to last for years. You can repair everything with spare parts available. You can replace parts and even do upgrades such as installing pressure gauges and temperature sensors.

We provide the following services:

  • Descaling the boiler and machine
  • Deep cleaning grouphead
  • Replacing parts
  • Upgrading parts
  • Repairs

Small repairs we can do inhouse in Weesp. For big or complicated repairs we sometimes advice to send your machine to a trusted third party workshop.

If you bought your machine elsewhere and it is under warranty check it first. Generally speaking warranty is mostly void if you don't use a proper water filter, don't do proper backflushing, cleaning and occasional deep cleaning. Even with water filter periodic descaling is required. If a default or failure falls under factory warranty it will usually occur during the first weeks or months of machine usage. Most of the issues that occur later are usually normal maintenance (like replacing the window wipes and tires of a car).

We can usually give a quotation after short evaluation. It can however happen that another problem occurs. In this case we will contact you.

We will ask you for a pre-payment for (custom) parts and labor.

A first investigation /analysis usually takes 10-15min and costs 20 euro. We will deduct this from your final bill. When you decide not to proceed or we cannot establish the problem (we decide not to proceed) we will give you a 20 euro credit towards coffee beans.
