VST Precision Filter Baskets

recommended espresso routine below

VST's precision filters deliver consistent extraction performance over a wide range of concentration with reduced sediment

Designed to extract properly as a ristretto, normale or lungo with minimal or no change in grind setting at a fixed dose (typical variances of standard filters range from 50-200% of nominal open square area)

Holes are fabricated using a new micro-machine and finishing process 100% of holes are measured on every filter for min/max range limits on area and diameter to a precision of /- 20 µm (individual QC report provided with every filter) All holes are measured for circularity, placement, square area and blocked holes Hole pattern is centered to /- 1.0 mm and placement is oriented for uniform extraction throughout the entire puck

Wide outlet angle to prevent filters from clogging, anti-wear design ensures uniform performance for life of product Improved structural integrity, will withstand deflection from pump cycling without premature fatigue failures

We are excited to be stocking the new 25g baskets! Users will find the new 25g VST Precision Filter familiar in utility to the well known 22g model, at a similar grind setting, and is both predictable and forgiving with beverage amount variances. An increase of 25% in soluble solids delivered per shot over the 20g model.

Dose 26g in and 36g Beverage out to produce 5g of soluble solids at ~14% TDS and ~20% Extraction Yield. The additional high octane espresso beverage from these baskets delivers an extraordinary kick and coffee flavor boost to your espresso beverages.

VST Ridged or Ridgeless

what to choose?

In the world of espresso, VST baskets are highly regarded precision filter baskets used in portafilters. When you talk about the difference between "ridged" and "ridgeless" VST baskets, you're referring to a specific design feature on the side walls of the basket.

Here's the breakdown of the difference and their implications:

1. Ridged VST Baskets:

  • Description: These baskets have a small, internal ridge or indentation running horizontally around the inside wall of the basket, typically a few millimeters from the top.
  • Purpose: The ridge is designed to securely hold a standard portafilter spring in place. This spring is found in many commercial and prosumer espresso machine portafilters, and its job is to keep the basket firmly seated in the portafilter when knocking out spent coffee pucks.
  • Pros:
    • Secure fit: The basket is less likely to fall out of the portafilter when you're knocking out a puck.
    • Standard compatibility: Works seamlessly with portafilters designed with springs.
  • Cons:
    • Cleaning: The ridge can sometimes make it slightly harder to clean the basket thoroughly, as coffee oils and particles might accumulate there.
    • Tamper interference (minor): While rare with properly sized tampers, some tampers that are a very tight fit for the basket might theoretically catch on the ridge, though VST baskets are known for their precision fit with calibrated tampers.

2. Ridgeless VST Baskets:

  • Description: These baskets have perfectly smooth, straight internal side walls from top to bottom, with no ridge or indentation.
  • Purpose: They are designed to be used in portafilters that either do not have a spring (like some bottomless portafilters) or where the user prefers to remove and insert the basket without the spring's interference. They rely on the precise fit between the basket and the portafilter itself to stay in place, or gravity if it's a bottomless portafilter.
  • Pros:
    • Easier cleaning: No ridge means a completely smooth interior, making cleaning quicker and more effective.
    • Better tamper fit (potentially): Provides an absolutely unobstructed path for the tamper, ensuring a perfect, level tamp right to the edges.
    • Aesthetics/Preference: Some users simply prefer the clean look and feel of a ridgeless basket.
  • Cons:
    • Basket can fall out: Without a spring, the basket can easily fall out of a standard (spouted) portafilter when knocking out the puck, which can be messy and inconvenient. This is less of an issue with bottomless portafilters as the basket is clearly visible and handled more carefully.
    • Compatibility: Requires a portafilter that either doesn't have a spring or where the spring can be removed.

Which one to choose?

  • If you have a standard portafilter with a spring and prefer the basket to stay securely in place: Go for a ridged VST basket.
  • If you use a bottomless portafilter, or if your spouted portafilter allows the spring to be removed and you prioritize easier cleaning and a completely smooth tamper path: A ridgeless VST basket might be your preference.

Many professional baristas and serious home enthusiasts who use bottomless portafilters or frequently swap baskets might lean towards ridgeless for the ease of cleaning and perceived precision. However, for everyday use with a standard spouted portafilter, the ridged version is often more practical due to the spring retention.

Not sure? Bring your portafilter to the Lab and try before you buy (see below for more info). Our naked bottomless portafilters are a perfect fit for VST baskets!

Tip from the CoffeeNose👃

#extractmorewiththecoffeenose espresso routine

If you are an espresso pro (barista) and like to extract maximum sweetness to enjoy a pure black espresso (adding a bit of water, tonic or orange juice is fine!) I can reccomend my #extractmorewiththecoffeenose espresso routine

1. Spray or drip 1-3 drops of water on the beans before grinding (RDT)

2. grind fine - 30sec+ shot is no problem, lighter roasts need more time to extract

3. Use a professional WDT tool like the original Duomo WDT to distribute the coffee in your basket and remove static (it's an investment, but totally worth it!

4. Use a leveller like NCD (it's not really a distributor, but really a leveller) or Motta to lock your puck preparation

5. depending on the depth of your leveller and how soft or hard you insert the portafilter in the grouphead you can use a tamper to further lock in the puck preparation and compress the puck more. This step is optional and can greatly influence the shot time both positively and negatively. It can both avoid and create chanelling. Yes, indeed, good things (shots) never come easy 😁

6. Use a puck screen. This helps even wetting of the puck and, especially beneficial for the home barista, keeps your shower screen more clean. This is also optional and like the tamping can work both ways. It has to fit also your basket size and puck height.

7. Use a chilling ball, use a thick ceramic cup from the freezer or use a professional chilling tool like Paragon. Optional, but highly recommended!

8. A few ml water at the bottom of the cup can help open up the espresso. Experiment with how much water you like (depending on the beans/blend). You can go all the way up to americano (nowadays often called long black). If you can not put a tall glass under the portafilter, use a shotglass.

What about the basket? Lately there has been lots of hype online about precision baskets. If it's worth it to spend hundreds on baskets is up to you. Upgrading from a standard basket that comes with your espresso machine to a VST basket does pay off. VST basket does pay off.

Do it naked, feel free and see everything 😉. If you are not yet into bottomless brewing with a naked portafilter give it a try. With an optional mirror you can see without sitting on your knees.
