Espresso Omakase Tasting Experience

Taste Espresso Like Never Before

Espresso Omakase – The Ultimate Espresso Tasting Experience ☕⚡

Taste Espresso Like Never Before

For espresso lovers, home baristas, coffee geeks and flavour explorers who know that espresso can be so much more than “strong coffee”.

Have you ever ordered an espresso and felt disappointed — too sour, too bitter, too thin, too harsh, or simply not as exciting as it should be?

Then this experience is for you.

The Espresso Omakase @ Amsterdam Coffee Lab is a guided, multi-course espresso tasting designed for curious coffee lovers, serious home baristas and specialty coffee nerds who want to understand what really happens inside that tiny, intense cup.

This is more than a flight of espressi. It is a deep sensory dive into flavour, aroma, body, mouthfeel, extraction, freshness, roast profile, terroir, blends, single origins, water, recipes and ratios.

Expect to get caffeinated. ⚡

This experience is not for the faint-hearted — or for empty stomachs. 😉

What to Expect 👃☕

During this espresso-focused tasting journey, you’ll experience espresso in a completely new way.

You’ll taste a curated lineup of espressi made from different coffees, recipes and extraction styles. We’ll explore how the same coffee can change dramatically depending on dose, yield, grind size, extraction time, water, roast development and freshness.

Together, we’ll unravel the flavour profile of each espresso: sweetness, acidity, bitterness, body, finish, aroma, balance and mouthfeel.

You’ll learn why some espressi feel silky and syrupy, while others taste juicy, sparkling, creamy, chocolaty, nutty, fruity, floral or intense.

During This Experience You Will Explore 🔬

A curated espresso tasting lineup

Taste multiple espressi side by side and discover how different coffees, roast styles and recipes change the cup.

🍫 Flavour profiling

Learn to identify notes like chocolate, nuts, caramel, red fruit, citrus, florals, spice, tropical fruit and more.

👄 Body & mouthfeel

Understand texture: thin, creamy, silky, syrupy, heavy, round, drying or lingering.

⚖️ Espresso recipes & ratios

Discover how dose, yield and brew ratio influence strength, extraction, balance and flavour.

🔬 Extraction basics

Learn why espresso can taste sour, bitter, hollow, harsh, salty, sweet or beautifully balanced.

🌱 Freshness & degassing

Understand why super-fresh coffee behaves differently, how CO₂ affects extraction, and when coffee is actually at its best.

🔥 Roast profile

Compare how light, medium and darker roasts behave in espresso — and why “espresso roast” does not mean just one thing.

🌍 Terroir & processing

Explore how origin, altitude, variety and processing influence espresso flavour.

🧬 Blends vs single origins

Taste the difference between balanced specialty blends and expressive single-origin espresso.

💧 Water quality

Learn why water can make or break espresso flavour, body and extraction.

🛠️ Dialling in

Understand how small changes in grind, recipe and technique can completely transform your shot.

A Guided Journey by the CoffeeNose 👃

Led by Wouter Brunia, also known as the CoffeeNose, this tasting is a deep dive into espresso flavour, sensory science and extraction.

Like a sommelier presenting fine wine, Wouter will guide you through each espresso and explain what you are tasting — and why.

You’ll learn how to connect flavour to recipe, roast, freshness, origin and extraction. Instead of simply saying “I like this one” or “this tastes sour”, you’ll start understanding what is happening in the cup.

It’s fun for your brain, taste buds and nose. ☕👃🧠

More Than an Espresso Flight ⚡

This is not just a tray of small coffees.

Each espresso is prepared and discussed with purpose. We may compare different recipes, different beans, different roast styles, different ratios or different extraction approaches. Some shots may be sweet and classic, others bright and juicy, wild and experimental, or intense and geeky.

You’ll taste espresso as a sensory experience, not just as a caffeine hit.

Although… there will definitely be caffeine. A lot of it. 😉

Who Is This Experience For? 🎯

Do you think Coffee tastes like coffee?

Dive into the world of coffee

Oops, you probably did not yet taste specialty coffee. That's like only having tasted one kind of red wine but never different grapes, white wine, orange wine, sparkling wine. Just like wine and beer, the world of coffee is super diverse. From the Nutty and Chocolaty flavours associated with Brazilian coffee, the Earthy and Spicy flavours associated with Indonesian coffee to the floral, delicate, black tea like flavors associated with a washed Ethiopian coffee.

Coffee gets it's initial flavor from the variety of the berry (the bean is the seed of the coffee cherry, a fruit!), the terroir and the processing.

Have you tried coffee cupping?

How professionals assess coffee

Discover the art of coffee tasting as professionals expertly sniff, slurp, and spit... and trust me, you won't want to miss the chance to savor coffee from a cupping bowl in this immersive experience.

Is all that caffeine safe?

Spit it out

Coffee tasters, much like wine connoisseurs, often spit out the coffee unless it is truly exceptional. This practice helps prevent intoxication, ensuring that each cup is evaluated fairly without the influence of caffeine. Each person's response to caffeine is unique, and you probably have a good sense of how it affects you. Caffeine is an alkaloid that enters the bloodstream rapidly, so spitting out the coffee doesn't completely negate its effects. Drinking plenty of water and not consuming coffee on an empty stomach can help manage its impact.

How come you might think all coffee tastes the same?

Let us prove you wrong

It's possible that your coffee experience has been limited to commercial blends, which often mix together 15 to 30 different single origin coffees. These blends are crafted for consistency, ensuring that you know exactly what to expect with each cup. While this may seem convenient, it can also lead to a rather uninspiring experience. Imagine only ever drinking one type of tea—wouldn't you crave the excitement of exploring diverse flavors and aromas?

Embrace the world of single origin coffees and discover a whole new realm of taste!

Too much of the coffee available today is dull and bitter. Treat yourself to the exceptional flavor you truly deserve.

Do you appreciate having options?
Are you eager to try different flavors?

Are you willing to embrace the unexpected?

If you’re nodding your head in agreement, then this Coffee Tasting Experience is an absolute must for you (pun intended).

Not only do we explore the fascinating flavor origins mentioned earlier, but we also dive into the two pivotal elements that elevate coffee flavor: the art of roasting and the science of brewing. Don’t miss out on this flavorful journey!

Get ready to dive into an array of coffee roasts and brewing styles, plus some intriguing coffee blends... while you might know about the espresso martini, there are numerous other scrumptious cocktails, mocktails, and coffee-infused beverages to try.

Why do coffee experts avoid adding milk to their coffee?

Milk masks the true flavor of good coffee

Milk in coffee may seem appealing, but it often masks the harsh bitterness and astringent feel of subpar dark roast blends. By sweetening and adding milk, these drinks are cleverly marketed at exorbitant prices—three to five times that of a pure black espresso or filter coffee. This strategy not only enriches commercial coffee brands but also fuels the alarming rise in obesity and diabetes. It's time to reconsider what we’re really paying for in our coffee choices!
