NextLevel Mini PULSAR™ – No-Bypass Coffee Brewer with Flow Control
🚀 Big Pulsar Control. Optimized for a Single Cup.
The NextLevel Mini PULSAR™ takes the precision and versatility of the original Pulsar and scales it down specifically for smaller specialty-coffee brews.
Designed around coffee doses of approximately 12–20 grams, with 15 grams as the sweet-spot standard dose, the Mini creates an appropriately deep coffee bed even when you're brewing just one cup.
And unlike a conventional V60 or other open pour-over brewer, the PULSAR MINI is a true no-bypass brewer:
💧 Every drop of brewing water passes through the coffee bed.
Combine that with:
🚰 A fully adjustable flow-control valve
🌧️ A carefully designed dispersion cap
🔒 Full immersion with the valve closed
💧 Percolation with the valve open
⚖️ Precise brew-ratio control
and you get an exceptionally flexible brewer for anyone who enjoys experimenting with extraction.
Immersion.
Percolation.
Or anything in between.
One small brewer. A huge number of recipes. ☕🧪

💧 What Does “No Bypass” Mean?
All the Water Goes Through the Coffee
In many traditional pour-over brewers, some brewing water can travel around the edge of the coffee bed and reach the cup without passing fully through the coffee.
That is called bypass.
Bypass is not automatically bad—many fantastic brewers deliberately use it—but it adds another variable to the extraction.
The PULSAR MINI removes that variable.
Its cylindrical brewing chamber and flat filter force the brewing water through the complete coffee bed.
This means the strength of the final cup is determined much more directly by:
⚖️ Coffee dose
💧 Water quantity
⚙️ Grind size
⏱️ Contact time
🚰 Flow rate
🌡️ Temperature
🌀 Agitation
rather than an unknown amount of water slipping around the grounds.
Why no-bypass is interesting
✅ Easier control over brew strength
✅ Very efficient extraction
✅ More predictable recipes
✅ Great for experimenting with brew ratio
✅ Excellent for lighter specialty coffees
✅ Lets you deliberately manipulate contact time
For coffee geeks, it's a wonderfully clean brewing concept.
☕ MINI Means Proper Bed Depth at Small Doses
This is where the Mini becomes especially interesting.
The original Pulsar works beautifully with larger doses, but reducing the coffee quantity also creates a shallower coffee bed.
That changes:
💧 Flow resistance
📄 Filtration
⏱️ Contact time
⚙️ Grind requirements
👅 Extraction behaviour
NextLevel designed the Mini around approximately:
12–20 g coffee
with around:
15 g as the standard dose
The company notes that 15 g in the Mini creates approximately the same dry coffee-bed depth as 25 g in the original Pulsar.
That means you can work with a proper bed depth without brewing more coffee than you actually want.
Perfect for:
☕ One-person brewing
💎 Expensive microlots
🌸 Gesha
🧪 Comparative tastings
🌅 Your first coffee of the morning
👃 Sensory experiments
Less coffee.
Not less control.
🚰 Complete Flow Control
You Decide When—and How Fast—the Coffee Drains
The valve underneath the brewer is one of the defining features of the Pulsar system.
Valve closed 🔒
Water remains inside the brewing chamber.
Use this for:
🌸 Blooming
🫙 Full immersion
🧪 Long pre-infusion
☕ Steep-and-release brewing
Valve partially open 🚰
Restrict the flow to deliberately increase contact time.
This can be particularly useful when:
⚙️ You prefer a coarser grind
🌸 You want lower agitation
💧 You want the water column to drain slowly
👅 You're chasing sweetness and extraction without aggressive pouring
Valve fully open 💧
Allow the coffee to drain quickly for:
☕ More conventional percolation-style recipes
🧪 Pulse-pouring experiments
🧊 Flash-brew recipes
⚙️ Finer grind experimentation
The valve lets you manipulate flow independently from grind size.
That's a very powerful brewing variable.
🌧️ Dispersion Cap – Pour Without Pouring
The carefully designed top cap distributes water across the coffee bed through multiple openings.
Instead of needing perfect kettle technique, you can pour water into the top and let the dispersion cap distribute it.
This helps produce:
✅ More uniform wetting
✅ Lower agitation
✅ Reduced dependence on pouring technique
✅ Easier repeatability
✅ Consistent brewing without a gooseneck kettle
This can be particularly useful with coffees that taste better with minimal agitation.
👃 CoffeeNose Tip – Less Agitation Can Be More
The Mini's narrower chamber means we generally would not aggressively swirl or shake the brewer.
NextLevel itself notes that the smaller filter can clog more easily than the full-size Pulsar and recommends relatively low-agitation brewing approaches.
That fits our preferred approach nicely:
Start calm.
Let grind size, water and controlled flow do the work.
Excessive stirring can:
⚠️ Move fines towards the filter
⚠️ Slow the brew dramatically
⚠️ Increase bitterness or dryness
⚠️ Make recipes less repeatable
With many light-roasted coffees, a gentle bloom followed by controlled flow can produce beautifully clean, sweet cups.
🧪 Immersion + Percolation = Huge Recipe Freedom
This is what makes the Pulsar family so much fun.
You are not forced into one brewing style.
Full Immersion
Close the valve.
Add coffee and water.
Steep.
Open the valve.
Simple.
Bloom + Percolation
Close the valve during the bloom.
Allow the coffee to become fully saturated.
Open the valve and continue with controlled pours.
Flow-Restricted Percolation
Keep the valve partially closed throughout the brew.
Use the valve itself to manage drawdown rather than relying entirely on grind size.
Pulse Pouring
Open the valve and add several smaller pours.
Maintain a lower water column for a different extraction profile.
Hybrid Recipes
Bloom closed.
Open.
Pour.
Restrict.
Open again.
The brewer doesn't decide the recipe.
You do.
🧊 Brilliant for Flash-Brewed Iced Coffee
The Mini is especially interesting for Japanese-style flash brew / iced filter coffee.
Brew a concentrated hot extraction directly over ice.
The no-bypass design helps maintain control over the brew strength despite using less hot brewing water.
A useful starting idea:
☕ Coffee
15 g
💧 Hot water
Approximately 150 g
🧊 Ice
Approximately 90 g
This follows roughly a 1 : 10 : 6 coffee : hot water : ice approach.
Adjust grind, valve position and temperature according to the coffee.
The result can be:
🍓 Vibrant fruit
🌸 Strong aromatics
✨ Excellent clarity
❄️ Immediate chilling
☀️ Fantastic summer coffee

📄 Small Paper Filter – Big Influence
The PULSAR MINI uses its own smaller flat paper filters.
Because every drop of water must pass through the filter, the filter itself plays an especially important role.
It influences:
💧 Flow resistance
✨ Clarity
🫧 Mouthfeel
⚙️ Fine-particle retention
⏱️ Drawdown time
Each Mini PULSAR includes a pack of:
so you can start brewing immediately.
Replacement Mini paper filters are available from WB.coffee online and for Click & Collect in Weesp.
🔩 Optional Stainless-Steel Filters
Want to explore a completely different cup profile?
NextLevel also offers optional stainless-steel filter discs for the Pulsar Mini.
Compared with paper filtration, a metal filter can allow more:
🫧 Oils
🔬 Fine particles
🍫 Body
👅 Texture
into the final cup.
Paper
✨ Cleaner
🌸 More clarity
🍓 Greater flavour separation
Stainless steel
🫧 More texture
🍫 Fuller body
☕ Different mouthfeel
Same brewer.
Same coffee.
Very different filtration.
That's exactly the sort of experiment we like.
📐 Compact Dimensions
The Mini PULSAR is genuinely small.
Brewer height
Approximately 5 inches / 127 mm
Base diameter
Approximately 3 15/16 inches / 100 mm
Weight
Approximately 0.62 lb / 280 g
It fits easily into:
🎒 Travel setups
🏠 Small coffee corners

❤️ Why We Like It at WB.coffee
The original Pulsar is already one of the more interesting manual brewers because it separates variables that conventional pour-over often mixes together.
The Mini makes the concept much more relevant for everyday specialty coffee drinking.
We particularly like:
💧 True no-bypass brewing
⚖️ A geometry designed around realistic 12–20 g doses
🚰 Independent flow control
🌧️ Low-agitation dispersion cap
🔒 Full immersion whenever you want it
🧪 Huge recipe flexibility
💎 Efficient use of expensive coffee
The 15 g standard dose is especially smart.
If you're opening an exceptional 200 g Gesha or competition lot, you don't necessarily want to use 25–30 grams just to create a sensible coffee-bed depth.
The Mini lets you use 15 grams properly.
That gives you approximately thirteen brews from a 200 g bag instead of only seven or eight large brews—and more opportunities to change grind, temperature, water and flow while learning what makes that coffee special.
For us, this isn't really a “small Pulsar.”
It is a precision one-cup Pulsar.
And that makes a lot of sense. 👃☕🚀
