IMS Competition B70 2T H24.5 M – Precision Espresso Basket – 12–18 g
☕ Versatile 58 mm Precision Basket – Flat Bottom with Rounded Internal Corners
The IMS Competition B70 2T H24.5 M is one of our favourite versatile precision baskets for 58 mm espresso machines.
With its:
⬜ flat bottom
↪️ rounded internal corners
💧 641-hole M-pattern
📏 24.5 mm height
it works extremely well for home baristas and professional coffee bars looking for a flexible:
12–18 g espresso basket
for everything from smaller double shots to classic espresso, flat whites and stronger milk-drink recipes.
Unlike the B70 2TC H24 E, this basket is not convex. Its flat floor and rounded internal transition create a more conventional puck geometry while IMS concentrates the perforation pattern toward the useful central extraction area.

⬜ Flat Bottom with Rounded Internal Corners
The geometry is the main reason to choose this basket.
The B70TH24.5M uses a:
flat basket floor
combined with:
rounded internal corners
where the cylindrical wall transitions into the base.
IMS describes this geometry as helping use the central portion of the coffee puck efficiently while avoiding poorly utilised coffee in sharp lower corners.
This makes the H24.5M a good choice when you prefer:
☕ Conventional puck geometry
⚖️ Broad dose flexibility
🌀 WDT-based puck preparation
🔨 Precision tamping
🧲 Optional puck-screen use.
💧 641-Hole M-Pattern
The base contains:
641 precision holes
in IMS's concentrated:
M-pattern.
Technical layout:
Perforated area: Ø49 mm
M-pattern concentration: Ø44 mm
Hole diameter: 0.30 mm
Basket height: 24.5 mm.
Rather than spreading the perforations equally across every possible millimetre of the basket floor, IMS concentrates the M-pattern toward the central extraction area.
Combined with the rounded internal corners, this gives the basket its characteristic extraction geometry.
⚖️ CoffeeNose 👃 Recommended Dose Ranges
We do not believe one fixed gram number describes an espresso basket properly.
Coffee volume changes with:
🫘 Bean density
🔥 Roast level
⚙️ Grind size
🌱 Variety
💨 Porosity
📏 Desired headspace
🧲 Puck-screen thickness.
For the H24.5M, we use the same practical dose philosophy reflected in our updated H24 E listing rather than simply copying IMS's much broader laboratory capacity figures. The current WB.coffee H24 E page uses an adjusted framework of 12–16 g for darker coffee, 15–17 g medium and 16–19 g light, while presenting the basket commercially as a 12–18 g model.
🔥 Darker roast
12–16 g
Useful for traditional espresso, darker blends and smaller milk-drink shots.
Because darker coffee is more expanded and porous, it occupies more basket volume per gram.
☕ Medium roast
15–17 g
Our favourite general-purpose range for many specialty espresso blends.
A very natural starting point for:
☕ Straight espresso
🤎 Flat white
🥛 Cappuccino.
🌸 Light roast
16–19 g
Dense light-roasted beans generally occupy less volume for the same weight.
That allows a larger gram dose while maintaining sensible puck depth and headspace.
👃 Why We Still Call It a 12–18 g Basket
Because:
12–18 g describes the useful everyday range
for the majority of WB.coffee customers far better than quoting the theoretical maximum mass of an unusually dense light roast.
IMS's own laboratory test for the H24.5M reaches considerably higher with light-roasted Ethiopia, but IMS itself shows that the measured capacity changes dramatically with roast density.
We would rather help you choose a sensible recipe than persuade you that:
“more grams = better espresso.”
It doesn't.
📊 Which Basket Should I Choose?
| | IMS H24 E Convex | IMS H24.5 M Flat | VST 15 g |
| WB.coffee positioning | 12–18 g | 12–18 g | 14–16 g |
| Height | 24 mm | 24.5 mm | 22 mm |
| Bottom | Convex | Flat | Flat / VST geometry |
| Internal corners | Convex transition | Rounded | VST geometry |
| Pattern | E | M | VST proprietary |
| Holes | 715 | 641 | Individually QC measured |
| Perforation area | Ø49 mm | Ø49 mm / M area Ø44 mm | Controlled open area |
| Ridge | Ridgeless | External ridge | Ridged or ridgeless |
| Tamper | 58 / 58.4 mm | 58 / 58.4 mm | 58.4 mm flat |
| Main strength | Convex extraction geometry | Versatility | Tight QC / repeatability |
| Best for | Bottomless / geometry experimentation | Everyday home & café use | Dedicated calibrated 15 g workflow |
IMS confirms the H24 E's convex 715-hole design and the H24.5M's rounded-corner 641-hole M geometry. VST specifies its 15 g EU basket at 14–16 g, 22 mm high, with a 58.4 mm flat-face tamper.
🆚 H24.5M vs H24 E Convex
Both can sensibly be sold as:
12–18 g precision baskets
in the WB.coffee range.
The decision should therefore primarily be based on:
geometry.
⬜ B70TH24.5M
Choose this if you want:
✔️ Flat bottom
✔️ Rounded internal corners
✔️ M-pattern
✔️ External ridge
✔️ Broad everyday flexibility
✔️ Straight espresso + milk drinks
✔️ Home and café workflow.
🥣 B70 2TC H24 E
Choose this if you specifically want:
✔️ Convex bottom
✔️ Ridgeless basket
✔️ 715-hole E-pattern
✔️ Centre-focused convex extraction
✔️ Excellent bottomless-portafilter presentation.
The current WB.coffee H24 E is also positioned as 12–18 g, so the difference is no longer simply “small basket versus large basket”.
🆚 H24.5M vs VST 15 g
The VST 15 g has a much narrower official dose window:
14–16 g.
VST's key advantage is manufacturing traceability.
VST states that:
🔬 100% of holes are measured
🎯 Open area is controlled within ±5%
📐 Hole placement and circularity are inspected
🔢 Each basket receives an individual serial number
📄 Each basket includes a QC report.
So:
Choose IMS H24.5M
for:
flexibility.
Choose VST 15 g
for:
a tightly defined 14–16 g reference basket with unusually intensive QC.
Neither automatically makes tastier espresso.
📏 Headspace Is More Important Than the Number on the Box
A good dose creates appropriate space between:
the prepared puck
and:
the shower screen.
Too much coffee can cause the dry puck to press into:
🚿 Shower screen
🔩 Central screw.
Too little coffee can create a very shallow puck with excessive headspace.
The correct dose depends on:
coffee + grinder + basket + machine.
🧲 Using 12–15 g? Add a Puck Screen
One of the reasons we like the H24.5M for home use is that you can deliberately use it for smaller doubles.
For:
12–15 g
we often recommend a thin:
58.5 mm puck screen
provided your machine has enough clearance.
It can help:
💧 distribute incoming water
🛡️ protect a shallower coffee bed
🧼 keep the shower screen cleaner
📏 occupy part of the additional headspace
♻️ reduce coffee residue inside the group.
This is particularly useful for home baristas who want:
a smaller dose
without giving up:
a proper double basket.
⚠️ Don't Use the Puck Screen to Hide the Wrong Basket
A puck screen is useful.
It is not magic.
If the coffee bed is extremely shallow, choose a smaller basket instead.
The screen should complement:
good basket selection
not compensate for an obviously unsuitable one.
🌀 Puck Preparation Matters
A precision basket can only make extraction more repeatable if the puck going into it is also repeatable.
Control:
⚖️ Dose
⚙️ Grind
🌀 Distribution
🔨 Tamp
📏 Headspace.
A precision basket cannot correct:
❌ Large clumps
❌ Uneven density
❌ Poor grinder alignment
❌ Crooked tamping.
In fact, better basket consistency can make poor puck preparation more obvious.
👃 CoffeeNose Puck Workflow
For home espresso we recommend:
1. Weigh the dose
Don't fill the basket by eye.
2. Grind
Use a grinder capable of proper espresso adjustment.
3. WDT
Break up clumps and distribute the coffee throughout the puck.
4. Tamp
Level and repeatable.
5. Add the puck screen
When useful for your dose and machine.
6. Brew by beverage weight
Measure what comes out.
7. Taste
Then adjust one variable at a time.
🌀 Compatible with DUOMO WDT
The 58 mm B70 basket works very well with:
DUOMO The Eight
and similar DUOMO WDT systems.
Adjustable needle depth is particularly useful because the H24.5M may contain:
13 g today
and:
18 g tomorrow.
The tool should distribute through the depth of the coffee bed rather than simply drawing patterns across the surface.
🌀 Compatible with MHW-3BOMBER Cyclone WDT
The:
MHW-3BOMBER Cyclone WDT
is another excellent match for 58 mm IMS baskets.
Again, adjustable working depth is important.
The goal of WDT is:
even puck density
before tamping.
Not simply:
spinning something expensive on top of the coffee.
🔨 Precision Spring Tamper Recommended
Finish puck preparation with a:
58.4–58.5 mm precision spring tamper
when compatible with your basket.
A close fit helps minimise the untamped ring of coffee around the wall.
A spring mechanism helps give:
🎯 Consistent force
📐 Level tamping
🔄 Better repeatability between shots.
The exact kilograms of tamping force are less important than:
fully compressing the puck consistently and keeping the tamper level.
☕ Starting Recipe – Straight Espresso
For a medium specialty espresso:
Dose
16–17 g
Beverage
34–40 g
Ratio
Approximately 1:2–1:2.4
Then taste.
For straight espresso we usually prioritise:
✨ Clarity
🍯 Sweetness
🍋 Balanced acidity
👅 Texture
🌰 Finish.
🤎 Flat White Recipe Direction
For a flat white, you generally need enough espresso concentration to remain clearly present through milk.
Start around:
Dose
16–18 g
Beverage
30–36 g
Then adjust according to:
🫘 Coffee
🥛 Milk volume
🍫 Desired flavour intensity.
🥛 Larger Milk Drinks
For a cappuccino, latte or larger milk drink, you may need:
⚖️ Slightly more coffee
☕ Shorter beverage ratio
🔥 More developed roast
🍫 A blend with stronger chocolate/nut/caramel structure.
The same espresso recipe is not automatically ideal for:
☕ straight espresso
and:
🥤 300 ml milk drinks.
🏢 Café Recipe Development @ Amsterdam Coffee Lab
For coffee bars we help build the complete recipe rather than selling a basket and leaving you with it.
We work through:
🧺 Basket
Which basket volume and geometry?
🫘 Coffee
Single origin or blend?
⚙️ Grinder
Which burrs and grind range?
⚖️ Dose
How much coffee?
🌀 Puck preparation
WDT, distribution and tamp.
☕ Beverage ratio
How many grams into the cup?
🥛 Drink
Straight espresso, flat white, cappuccino or larger milk drink?
⚡ Workflow
Can every barista repeat the recipe efficiently during service?
👃 Different Drinks Deserve Different Recipes
A beautiful:
17 g → 40 g
single-origin espresso may be delicious straight.
Put it into a large milk drink and it may disappear.
A:
17 g → 30 g
chocolate-driven blend can work brilliantly in milk while feeling too concentrated as a straight espresso.
At Amsterdam Coffee Lab we help coffee bars optimise recipes for:
☕ Straight espresso
🤎 Flat white
🥛 Cappuccino
🥤 Larger milk drinks
from:
basket → grinder → dose → puck preparation → beverage ratio → workflow.
🌍 Single Origin vs Blend
🌸 Single origin
May benefit from:
🌡️ Higher brewing temperature
☕ Longer ratio
⚙️ Finer grind
⚖️ Higher dose with dense light roast
to emphasise:
🍓 Fruit
🌸 Florals
✨ Clarity.
🍫 Espresso blend
May work better with:
☕ Shorter ratios
🌰 More body
🍫 Chocolate
🍮 Caramel
🥛 Milk compatibility.
The basket should support the recipe.
Not dictate it.
🧼 Compatible with Kaffee Klar
For commercial workflow the H24.5M's flat-bottom geometry is suitable for professional automatic portafilter-cleaning systems such as:
Kaffee Klar
when fitted with the correct cleaning head for the basket shape.
Automatic puck removal can help reduce:
🔊 Knock-box noise
🖐️ Repetitive barista impact
🧹 Mess
⚡ Cleaning time.
🧼 Compatible with QuinSpin
The basket can also be integrated with:
QuinSpin automatic portafilter cleaners
using the cleaning head appropriate for the basket geometry.
Correct head selection matters because professional automatic cleaners are designed around the actual shape of the basket rather than using one generic mechanism for everything.
🧼 Deep Cleaning Still Matters
Automatic puck removal does not remove:
coffee oils.
Regularly rinse the basket with hot water and periodically use a professional:
espresso & coffee-oil cleaner
to prevent oxidised oils from affecting flavour.
Browse our:
espresso baskets
for alternative sizes and geometries.
🫘 Coffee Pairings
For milk drinks, we particularly recommend:
CN – Chocolaty & Nutty
with:
🍫 Milk chocolate
🌰 Nuts
🍮 Caramel
🍯 Brown sugar.
Or:
VC – Vanilla & Caramel
for a softer, sweeter espresso profile.

Espresso Tasting Set
and compare different coffees using the same basket, dose and beverage ratio.

❤️ Why We Like It at WB.coffee
The H24.5M is one of the most useful IMS baskets because it doesn't force you into one narrow style of espresso.
You can use it for:
13–14 g smaller double
with thoughtful puck preparation and a puck screen.
Or:
16–18 g classic specialty espresso
without changing to another basket.
Its:
⬜ flat bottom
↪️ rounded internal corners
💧 641-hole M-pattern
📏 24.5 mm depth
make it a very flexible foundation.
CoffeeNose verdict 👃
Choose the:
H24.5M
if you want a versatile 12–18 g flat-bottom basket.
Choose the:
H24 E
if you specifically want the convex, ridgeless 715-hole geometry.
Choose:
VST 15 g
if you want a deliberately narrow 14–16 g calibrated reference basket with very intensive manufacturing QC.
And remember:
basket size is not your espresso recipe.
The complete recipe is:
coffee → grinder → dose → distribution → tamp → basket → yield → milk → workflow → taste.
That is also how we approach espresso consulting for professional coffee bars.
