🍃 Tumsong Tea Garden — Himalayan Terroir
The Tumsong Tea Garden is situated in the mountainous Darjeeling region of northern India, where altitude, cool temperatures and mountain breezes influence the development of the tea leaves.
At elevations ranging from approximately 800 to 1,770 metres above sea level, the tea bushes experience relatively slow growth, particularly during the cooler early season.
This can contribute to the development of tender buds and delicate aromatic compounds.
The first pluck, commonly known as the first flush, is particularly prized for its lively, fresh character.
🌸 What Makes First Flush Darjeeling Special?
Unlike the deeper, rounder and often more distinctly muscatel second-flush Darjeelings, first-flush teas are generally appreciated for their freshness, floral complexity and lighter body.
Sensory profile:
- 🌸 Aroma: Fresh flowers, delicate green notes and subtle fruit.
- 🍇 Flavour: Gentle muscatel nuances, light fruitiness and a hint of nutmeg.
- 🍃 Body: Light to medium, elegant and refreshing.
- ✨ Finish: Clean, gently brisk and aromatic.
- 🎨 Liquor: Typically a bright golden to light amber infusion, depending on brewing.
The natural character of the leaves makes this tea especially enjoyable without milk or sugar.
🫖 Brewing Guide — The CoffeeNose Recommendation
First-flush Darjeeling deserves careful brewing. Although it is classified as black tea, its delicate early-season leaves can respond beautifully to slightly cooler water than many robust breakfast teas.
| Parameter | 👃 CoffeeNose Recommendation |
| Tea | 2 g loose-leaf tea |
| Water | 200 ml |
| Temperature | 90–95°C |
| First infusion | 2–3 minutes |
| Second infusion | 3–4 minutes |
| Water quality | Fresh, soft water with low mineral content |
| Re-steeping | Yes, depending on your preferred strength |
👃 CoffeeNose Tip — Temperature Changes the Experience
Try brewing the same tea at 90°C and 95°C.
At the lower temperature, you may notice a more delicate floral expression and softer mouthfeel. At 95°C, the infusion can become more intense, with greater briskness and a firmer structure.
Want to explore further? Try a small tasting experiment:
- Brew 2 g of tea in 200 ml of water at 90°C for 3 minutes.
- Prepare a second sample using the same dose and time at 95°C.
- Compare aroma, sweetness, astringency and aftertaste.
- Let both samples cool slightly and taste again.
Our advice: Start at 90–95°C rather than boiling water to preserve the tea's delicate balance. If you prefer a stronger, more brisk infusion, experiment with hotter water or a longer steep.
For a second infusion, add approximately 60 seconds to your initial brewing time.
🌱 Organic, Single-Origin & Naturally Aromatic
This Darjeeling is made from 100% organically grown tea leaves, without added flavourings.
Its character comes from the tea cultivar, growing conditions, harvest season and processing rather than added ingredients.
The FTGFOP leaf grade indicates a fine, whole-leaf style with an emphasis on tender tips.
FTGFOP stands for Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe. It is a traditional tea leaf grading designation, not an independent guarantee of sensory quality.

💚 Why We Like It at WB.coffee
👃 The CoffeeNose appreciates first-flush Darjeeling for its delicate aromatic complexity and its ability to reveal subtle differences in brewing technique.
Tumsong's high-altitude growing environment and early-season harvest make this an interesting tea for anyone who enjoys exploring terroir and sensory nuance.
It's also a wonderful alternative for specialty coffee enthusiasts who appreciate floral, tea-like coffees from Ethiopia or other high-grown origins.
Unlike heavily flavoured tea blends, this is about appreciating the natural character of the leaf.
