Fellow Opus grinder
The do it all grinder for brew-it-all homes
Fellow Opus 2 / Gen 2 Automatic Conical Burr Grinder – Black
⚙️ One Grinder. Espresso to Cold Brew. Now Much Better.
The Fellow Opus 2 – Gen 2 in Black is the second generation of Fellow’s compact all-purpose grinder, redesigned to make switching between espresso and filter coffee considerably easier.
The biggest improvements are exactly where the original Opus needed them:
⚙️ Larger 48 mm stainless-steel conical burrs
🎯 Stepless external grind adjustment
✨ Redesigned near-zero-retention grind path
⚡ Faster grinding
🧲 Improved anti-static system
🛑 Automatic stop when the beans are finished
☕ Dedicated espresso dosing cup included
🧹 Magnetic cleaning brush included
Fellow designed Opus 2 to cover the complete grind spectrum—from fine espresso through AeroPress and pour-over to French press and cold brew.
For someone who wants one compact grinder for almost everything, without buying separate espresso and filter grinders, Opus 2 makes a lot of sense.

⚙️ New 48 mm Conical Burrs
The original Opus used 40 mm burrs.
For Opus 2, Fellow increased that to:
48 mm stainless-steel conical burrs
The larger burrs are designed to grind more efficiently and improve particle distribution, while Fellow also states that they help reduce unnecessary heat during grinding.
Fellow quotes a typical espresso dose as taking approximately:
9 seconds
which is a substantial improvement in everyday workflow over the original generation.
Why larger burrs are useful
⚡ Faster grinding
🌡️ Less time generating heat
🔬 Improved particle distribution
☕ Better espresso capability
💧 More consistent filter grinding
Burr diameter alone never determines grinder quality—but when combined with better geometry and a redesigned grind path, the 48 mm upgrade is meaningful.
🎯 Finally: Stepless External Adjustment
This may be our favourite Opus 2 improvement.
The original Opus used a combination of the outer adjustment ring and a second internal micro-adjustment mechanism.
It worked.
But switching between espresso and filter was not always intuitive.
Opus 2 fixes that.
The new grinder uses a smooth stepless adjustment dial on the side of the machine.
No separate internal adjustment.
No remembering where the inner ring was positioned.
Simply turn the dial.
☕ Why Stepless Matters for Espresso
Espresso can be extremely sensitive to small changes in grind size.
Imagine:
Setting A
18 g → 40 g in 21 seconds
Too fast.
Next fixed step
18 g → 40 g in 34 seconds
Too slow.
A stepped grinder may leave your ideal setting somewhere in between.
With a stepless adjustment system, you can simply move:
slightly finer
or
slightly coarser.
That makes dialing in espresso much more intuitive.
💧 Still Easy to Move Towards Filter
Stepless adjustment does not mean you lose brew-method guidance.
Fellow places a visual grind guide on the load-bin lid to indicate useful starting areas for:
☕ Espresso
🌀 AeroPress
💧 Pour-over
☕ Electric coffee makers
🫙 French press
🧊 Cold brew.
Use those markings as a starting point.
Then adjust according to taste.
✨ Redesigned Near-Zero-Retention Grind Path
A major focus of Opus 2 is reducing the amount of coffee left inside the grinder.
Fellow redesigned the internal grinding path and added an internal impeller that actively moves coffee through the exit chute.
The manufacturer describes the result as:
near-zero grind retention.
This is particularly useful for a grinder designed to change frequently between coffees and brew methods.
👃 Why Retention Matters
Imagine you grind:
🌸 A washed Ethiopia for V60
and next switch to:
🍫 A chocolate-driven espresso blend.
If several grams of Ethiopian coffee remain inside the grinder, some of yesterday's grind can end up in today's espresso.
Retention creates:
❌ Old coffee in a fresh dose
❌ Cross-contamination between beans
❌ Dose inconsistency
❌ Extra coffee wasted purging
Reducing retention makes switching coffees much more practical.
🧲 Improved Anti-Static Grinding
Opus 2 retains Fellow’s integrated anti-static technology, using an ionizer to reduce static charge as the coffee exits the grinder.
This helps reduce:
🌪️ Coffee grounds flying across the counter
⚡ Grounds sticking to the chute
🥤 Coffee sticking inside the dosing cup
🧹 Daily cleanup
It sounds like a small feature.
Use a grinder without effective anti-static technology for a week and you may change your mind.
🛑 Automatic Stop
Pre-Weigh. Press. Walk Away.
Opus 2 automatically stops grinding once the beans have passed through the grinder.
It can also alert the user when it detects a jam.
The workflow is simple:
1.
⚖️ Weigh your coffee.
2.
🫘 Pour it into Opus 2.
3.
▶️ Start grinding.
4.
🛑 Opus automatically stops when finished.
No timer calculation required.
No need to stand holding a button.
⚠️ Automatic Does Not Mean Grind-by-Weight
This distinction is important.
The Fellow Opus 2 is not a Grind-by-Weight grinder.
There is no integrated scale measuring the grounds.
It is also not designed as a traditional hopper grinder where you programme:
7.2 seconds = 18 grams.
Instead, it works best as a single-dose grinder:
weigh beans IN → grind the complete dose → automatic stop.
For us, that is actually the more logical workflow for an all-purpose home grinder.
Especially if you're regularly switching between:
☕ Espresso
💧 Filter
🌀 AeroPress
🧊 Cold brew.
🥤 Dedicated Espresso Dosing Cup Included
Fellow includes two separate magnetic catch cups.
☕ Standard Catch Cup
Capacity:
100 g
Ideal for:
💧 Pour-over
☕ Moccamaster
🫙 French press
🧊 Cold brew
☕ Batch brewing
⚖️ Espresso Dosing Cup
Capacity:
30 g
Designed to work conveniently with:
54 mm
and
58 mm
portafilter workflows.
The dosing cups magnetically locate underneath the grinder, helping keep the workflow tidy.
❤️ We Prefer a Dosing Cup for Espresso
For this grinder, the dosing cup makes perfect sense.
Grind into the cup.
Then:
- ⚖️ Check your dose.
- 🔄 Transfer grounds into the portafilter.
- 🌀 Distribute with WDT.
- 🔘 Tamp.
- 🧲 Add your puck screen if desired.
- ☕ Brew.
This is cleaner than trying to balance a portafilter directly underneath a compact all-purpose grinder.
And if you change between:
☕ espresso
and
💧 filter,
the dosing cup keeps both workflows simple.
🧲 Magnetic Catch Cups
Both included catch cups snap into position magnetically underneath the grinder.
This means:
✅ Easier positioning
✅ Less accidental knocking
✅ Cleaner transfer
✅ A more satisfying everyday workflow
Typical Fellow.
Not essential.
But nicely thought through.
🧹 Magnetic Cleaning Brush Included
Opus 2 now also includes a dedicated cleaning brush.
The clever part?
It stores magnetically behind the load bin.
That means the brush is actually where you need it instead of disappearing into a kitchen drawer after two weeks.
Use it regularly to remove loose grounds from:
🫘 Load bin
⚙️ Burr area
💨 Exit chute
🧲 Anti-static area
🔧 Tool-Free Burr Access
Fellow designed Opus 2 so the burr area can be accessed without tools for routine maintenance.
That matters.
Coffee grinders accumulate:
☕ Fines
🟤 Coffee oils
🌪️ Dust
🫘 Small bean fragments
especially when grinding darker or oilier coffee.
Being able to access the burrs easily makes regular maintenance much more realistic.
👃 CoffeeNose Tip – Keep the Ionizer Clean
Anti-static systems work best when the exit area remains clean.
If coffee dust and oils accumulate around the chute and ionizer, performance can deteriorate.
We recommend:
🧹 Brush loose grounds regularly
💨 Keep the exit chute clear
🧼 Avoid allowing oily residue to build up
⚙️ Periodically inspect the burr chamber
Don't wait until the grinder looks like it's producing a coffee snowstorm around the counter.
☕ Espresso to Cold Brew
Opus 2 is genuinely intended as an all-purpose grinder.
Fellow officially specifies it for:
☕ Espresso
💧 Pour-over
☕ Electric coffee makers
🌀 AeroPress
🫙 French press
🧊 Cold brew.
This is one of its biggest strengths.
You can use the same grinder in the morning for:
18 g espresso
then move coarser for:
15 g V60
and later grind:
70 g for batch brew.
👃 But Is One Grinder Really Perfect for Everything?
No.
And we think that's important to say.
A specialist espresso grinder can offer:
⚙️ More espresso-specific workflow
🔬 Different burr geometries
⚖️ Grind-by-Weight
🏗️ More commercial construction
A dedicated high-end filter grinder can offer:
✨ More clarity
🌸 Different particle distribution
💎 Specialist flat burrs
Opus 2's strength isn't that it beats every specialist grinder.
Its strength is:
it does a remarkably broad range of jobs with one compact machine.
For many home coffee drinkers, that is more useful than owning two grinders.
🆚 Opus 1 vs Opus 2
This is a substantial update rather than just a colour change.
| ⚙️ Original Opus | 🚀 Opus 2 | |
| Burr diameter | 40 mm | 48 mm |
| Burr type | Conical | Conical |
| Espresso capable | ✅ | ✅ |
| Filter capable | ✅ | ✅ |

| Espresso dosing cup | Original workflow | ✅ 54 & 58 mm compatible |
| Magnetic cleaning brush | ❌ | ✅ Included |
| Burr access | Serviceable | Tool-free routine access |
Fellow itself describes Opus 2 as a significant step forward from the original, highlighting the larger burrs, faster grinding, improved ionizer, stepless adjustment and new catch cups.
CoffeeNose verdict
If you're buying new:
choose Opus 2.
The simplified stepless adjustment alone makes the new grinder much easier to recommend for someone frequently switching between espresso and filter.
🆚 Opus 2 vs Fellow Ode Gen 2
These grinders are often confused.
They have very different purposes.
| ⚙️ Opus 2 | ✨ Ode Gen 2 | |
| Espresso | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Pour-over | ✅ | ✅ Excellent |
| Batch brew | ✅ | ✅ Excellent |
| French press | ✅ | ✅ |
| Cold brew | ✅ | ✅ |
| Burrs | 48 mm conical | 64 mm flat |
| Adjustment | Stepless | Stepped |
| Main purpose | All-purpose | Filter specialist |
| Flavour direction | Balanced & versatile | Higher filter clarity |
| Buy if... | You also make espresso | You only brew filter |
Fellow explicitly positions Opus 2 as its espresso-capable all-purpose grinder, while Ode Gen 2 is a filter-specific grinder and is not designed for espresso.
Simple choice
Do you make espresso?
Opus 2.
Never make espresso and want to maximise filter performance?
Ode Gen 2.
☕ Espresso Starting Point
Fellow indicates that espresso generally begins around the lower end of the Opus 2 adjustment range, while the exact setting depends on the coffee, basket, freshness and espresso machine.
A useful WB.coffee starting recipe:
🫘 Dose
18 g
💧 Espresso
38–42 g
⏱️ Time
Roughly 25–30 seconds as an initial diagnostic range.
Then taste.
Espresso too fast and sour?
⚙️ Grind finer.
Espresso barely flowing?
⚙️ Grind coarser.
Sweet, balanced and delicious?
Stop moving the dial.
The correct grind setting is the one that makes the coffee taste good.
Not the one somebody else uses on YouTube.
💧 Filter Coffee Starting Point
For filter coffee:
- Use the grind guide on the lid as your starting zone.
- Brew your normal recipe.
- Adjust according to flavour.
Thin, sour or weak?
Try:
⚙️ Finer.
Dry, bitter or astringent?
Try:
⚙️ Coarser.
Sweet, clear and balanced?
❤️ Save the setting.
🌀 Great with AeroPress
The Opus 2 is an especially logical AeroPress grinder because AeroPress recipes cover such a wide grind range.
You can experiment with:
⚙️ Fine espresso-style grinds
☕ Medium filter settings
🫙 Coarser immersion recipes
without needing another grinder.
Pair it with our Press It Real Good workshop if you want to go deeper into how grind, time, temperature and agitation change the cup.
💧 Perfect Match for Hario V60 & Switch
Use the Opus 2 with:
💧 Hario V60
🔀 Hario Switch
🌸 Origami
🚀 NextLevel Pulsar Mini
☕ Moccamaster
and use its stepless adjustment to fine-tune flow rather than being restricted to fixed clicks.
☕ Excellent Companion for Fellow Aiden
The obvious Fellow ecosystem pairing is:
Fellow Aiden + Opus 2
Aiden controls:
💧 Water delivery
🌡️ Temperature

the combination creates an extremely convenient home filter-coffee setup.
🫘 Coffee Pairing – FJ Fruity & Juicy
For an everyday all-purpose grinder, start with an everyday versatile coffee.

Try:
🍓 Kenya Currant Crush
🌸 Ethiopia Guji Majesty
💎 Guatemala Geisha – Finca Inferno
🍊 Fernando Díaz Orange Bourbon
🍍 Pineapple Express
🌍 Changing seasonal coffees
One grinder.
Same coffee.
Espresso today.
V60 tomorrow.
That's exactly where an all-purpose grinder becomes fun.
⚖️ Coffee Scale
The automatic stop means Opus 2 finishes grinding the beans you add.
That makes accurate input weighing important.
Use a responsive scale to measure:
Espresso
18.0 g
Filter
15.0 g
Moccamaster
60–75 g
depending on your recipe.
The grinder knows when it is empty.
It does not know whether you added 17.2 or 18.0 grams.
That's still your scale's job.
🔒 Airtight Coffee Storage
Fresh grinding only helps when the beans themselves are fresh.
Store your everyday coffee in:
🫙 Fellow Atmos
or
✨ Moccamaster Stainless-Steel Airtight Coffee Canister
away from:
☀️ Light
🔥 Heat
💧 Moisture
💨 Excess air.
Better beans in.
Better grounds out.
🧼 Grinder Maintenance
The Opus 2 is designed with straightforward, tool-free burr access for routine cleaning.
We recommend periodically cleaning:
⚙️ Burrs
🫘 Grinding chamber
💨 Exit chute
🧲 Anti-static area
🥤 Catch cups
Use the supplied magnetic brush regularly rather than waiting until old coffee has built up.
Especially important with darker coffee
Oily beans leave more residue inside grinders.
If you regularly use darker espresso roasts, clean more frequently.
🔧 WB.coffee Support, Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Buying coffee equipment from WB.coffee is not just about moving a box from our warehouse to your kitchen.
We can also help with:
⚙️ Grinder setup
☕ Espresso dial-in
💧 Filter recipes
🧼 Maintenance advice
🔧 Troubleshooting
🫘 Coffee selection
🎓 Training
If a grinder isn't behaving normally, we prefer diagnosing the actual problem rather than immediately telling you to buy a new one.
That is especially important with products you expect to use every day.

❤️ Why We Like Opus 2 at WB.coffee
The first Opus was ambitious.
A relatively affordable grinder that could genuinely move from espresso to cold brew was already unusual.
But it also had a workflow compromise we weren't particularly fond of:
the internal micro-adjustment system.
Opus 2 fixes that.
Now you get:
🎯 one stepless external adjustment
along with:
⚙️ larger 48 mm burrs
✨ lower retention
⚡ faster grinding
🧲 improved anti-static behaviour
🛑 automatic stopping
🥤 better dosing cups
🧹 a brush that's difficult to lose.
Those are the right upgrades.
Not a touchscreen.
Not Wi-Fi.
Not an app.
The parts that actually affect:
grinding and workflow.
We also appreciate that Fellow hasn't tried to pretend Opus 2 replaces every premium grinder.
If you only drink high-end filter coffee and chase extreme flavour separation, we would still look towards a dedicated filter grinder such as the Ode Gen 2 or more specialist equipment.
If you're building a serious dedicated espresso setup, there are compelling specialist espresso grinders above it too.
But if you say:
“I make espresso in the morning, V60 in the afternoon and AeroPress when I travel—and I want one compact grinder.”
then the Opus 2 becomes extremely easy to understand.
CoffeeNose verdict 👃
The best grinder is not automatically the grinder with the biggest burrs.
It is the grinder that fits the way you actually make coffee.
For the one-grinder household, Fellow has made Opus considerably better.
