ECM Puristika PID Anthracite – Espresso Machine for the Purist

☕ Pure Espresso. Nothing You Don’t Need.

The ECM Puristika PID Anthracite is an espresso machine with a refreshingly clear philosophy:

make exceptional espresso.

No steam wand.

No hot-water tap.

No oversized body designed around cappuccino production.

Instead, ECM concentrates the machine around the things that matter when espresso itself is the priority:

🌡️ PID temperature control

ECM brew group

🔥 0.75 L stainless-steel boiler

📈 Pump-pressure manometer

🔧 Easy-access expansion valve

🔇 Low-noise vibration pump

💧 Freely positionable 2 L glass water reservoir

⏱️ Shot counter & Fast Heat-Up

🧼 Group-cleaning reminder

And it packages all of this into an unusually compact anthracite machine only 19.5 cm wide. ECM currently specifies brew readiness in approximately 11 minutes.

For the espresso drinker who doesn't need milk steaming, the Puristika isn't a machine with something missing.

The simplicity is the point.

  • 🎓 Espresso Essentials & Masterclass

☕ Espresso Only – And Proud of It

The Puristika has deliberately been designed without a milk-steaming system.

That means it is primarily intended for people drinking:

☕ Espresso

☕ Ristretto

☕ Lungo-style espresso recipes

🧊 Espresso over ice

🍸 Espresso-based creations where steamed milk isn't required

This focused architecture avoids paying for a large steam boiler or heat-exchanger system that you may never use.

For us, that makes a lot of sense.

If you drink almost exclusively espresso, why dedicate half of your machine to producing steam?

ECM itself describes Puristika as a machine for “pure espresso enjoyment.”

👃 CoffeeNose – Espresso First

Many espresso machines are sold according to how many things they can do.

The Puristika takes almost the opposite approach.

It asks:

What do we actually need to make very good espresso?

A stable brew temperature.

A capable group.

Proper pressure.

Fresh water.

A good grinder.

And good coffee.

That's it.

For an espresso purist, removing the milk system can actually make the proposition more attractive rather than less.

🌡️ PID Temperature Control

Different coffees often taste better at different brewing temperatures.

The Puristika's electronic PID control allows you to adjust and regulate the boiler temperature rather than being locked into one fixed thermostat setting. ECM lists PID control as part of the machine's current software package.

This is especially useful when moving between:

🍫 Darker espresso profiles

🍮 Medium-roasted blends

🍓 Fruity modern espresso

🌸 Light-roasted single origins

Useful starting direction

🍫 Darker roast

Try a slightly lower temperature.

☕ Medium roast

Start in the middle.

🌸 Light roast

A higher temperature can often be worth exploring.

But don't select temperature according to a chart and assume you're finished.

Taste.

Temperature is another tool for changing:

🍋 Acidity

🍯 Sweetness

🍫 Bitterness

🌸 Aromatics

👅 Finish

🔥 0.75 L Stainless-Steel Boiler

Inside the Puristika is an approximately 0.75 litre stainless-steel boiler dedicated to brewing.

Because the machine doesn't need to maintain a large steam boiler, its thermal system can remain focused on espresso preparation.

This is a very different philosophy from a large HX or dual-boiler machine.

Puristika

☕ Espresso first

🏠 Compact

⚡ Less unnecessary heated volume

Large dual boiler

☕ Espresso

+

🥛 Heavy milk steaming

+

🔥 Much greater steam capacity

Neither concept is universally better.

Buy the architecture that matches the drinks you actually make.

⚡ Ready to Brew in Approximately 11 Minutes

ECM currently specifies the Puristika as ready to brew in around 11 minutes, supported by its Fast Heat-Up mode.

That's particularly welcome for an espresso-only machine.

Turn it on.

Prepare your grinder and coffee.

By the time your espresso station is organised, the machine is nearly ready to work.

CoffeeNose Tip

Even when the machine indicates readiness, keep the portafilter locked into the group while heating.

You want:

🔥 Boiler

☕ Group

🧺 Basket

🔩 Portafilter

all thermally prepared.

Espresso water touching a cold, heavy portafilter loses heat very quickly.

💧 External 2 L Glass Water Reservoir

One of the Puristika's most unusual features is its separate glass water reservoir.

The approximately 2 litre glass container can be positioned freely beside the machine, connected by hoses rather than being hidden inside the chassis.

This creates several advantages.

👀 You Can See Your Water

No opening the top of the machine to wonder whether there's enough water left.

The level is immediately visible.

🧼 Easy Access

The reservoir can be removed and cleaned separately.

📐 Flexible Counter Layout

Position it:

⬅️ Left of the machine

➡️ Right of the machine

↘️ Slightly behind it

depending on your available countertop space.

✨ It Looks Good

The glass reservoir is deliberately part of the Puristika's visual identity instead of something ECM tries to hide.

📏 Only 19.5 cm Wide

The machine itself measures approximately:

195 × 348 × 315 mm

without the portafilter.

That means a width of only:

19.5 cm

This makes the Puristika particularly interesting for:

🏠 Small kitchens

🏢 Offices

🪟 Narrow countertops

☕ Dedicated espresso corners

🎨 Design-conscious interiors

Because the water reservoir is separate, the footprint is also configurable rather than locked into one wide rectangular box.

🎨 Anthracite + Deep Blue

The Puristika has one of the most distinctive designs in ECM's home range.

ECM specifies:

🩶 Rounded anthracite housing

combined with:

🔵 Deep-blue accents on the pressure gauge and expansion valve.

It is noticeably less traditional than ECM's familiar polished stainless-steel E61 machines.

The design feels:

✨ Modern

🪨 Architectural

🔵 Slightly playful

☕ Still unmistakably serious

For someone who doesn't want another large mirror-finish stainless box on the kitchen counter, that's part of the appeal.

📈 Pump-Pressure Manometer

The front-mounted pressure gauge lets you monitor pump pressure during espresso preparation. ECM specifies the Puristika with a dedicated pump-pressure manometer.

It gives useful feedback about:

⚙️ Grind resistance

⚖️ Dose

🧺 Basket loading

🌀 Puck preparation

🔧 Pump-pressure setting

But remember:

9 bar does not automatically equal good espresso.

An espresso can display apparently sensible pressure and still channel badly or taste unpleasant.

Always evaluate together:

📈 Pressure

⏱️ Time

⚖️ Yield

👀 Flow

👅 Taste

🔧 Easily Accessible Expansion Valve

ECM has made the expansion valve readily accessible, allowing brewing pressure to be adjusted without turning basic pressure calibration into a major disassembly project.

That gives experienced users and technicians another useful tuning option.

CoffeeNose advice

Do not start changing pump pressure simply because somebody on a forum says:

“6 bar is better.”

First dial in:

⚙️ Grind

⚖️ Dose

💧 Ratio

🌡️ Temperature

Then experiment with pressure if you have a reason.

Change one variable.

Taste.

Compare.

🔇 Low-Noise Vibration Pump

The Puristika uses ECM's low-noise vibration pump rather than a rotary pump.

That helps keep the machine:

📐 Compact

⚖️ Relatively light

🏠 Suitable for home use

while ECM has specifically engineered the installation around reduced pump noise.

The machine weighs approximately 13.4 kg.

🔢 Shot Counter

The integrated electronics include a shot counter, allowing you to keep track of machine use.

This can be useful for:

🧼 Cleaning intervals

🔧 Maintenance planning

☕ Tracking usage

🏢 Small-office installations

It's not the reason to buy a Puristika—but once you have it, it becomes useful information.

🧼 Group Cleaning Reminder

Puristika also includes an electronic group-cleaning reminder.

That's particularly useful because espresso-only machines still accumulate plenty of:

☕ Coffee oils

🟤 Fine coffee particles

👃 Oxidised residue

around the brewing system.

The absence of milk does not mean the machine is maintenance-free.

🌱 ECO Mode

An integrated ECO mode helps reduce unnecessary energy consumption when the machine is not actively being used.

This suits the Puristika philosophy particularly well:

Heat what you need.

Make espresso.

Don't maintain an unnecessary steam system all day.

🧲 Magnetic Puck Screen 58.5 mm

A 0.2 mm magnetic puck screen is a useful addition to a serious espresso setup.

It can help:

💧 Distribute initial water more evenly

🫧 Support uniform puck saturation

🧼 Keep the shower screen cleaner

♻️ Reduce unnecessary flushing

And because it is magnetic:

🧲 Lift it out before knocking the puck away.

No burned fingers.

No screen disappearing into the knock box.

🌀 WDT & Puck Preparation

The Puristika gives you stable brewing conditions.

Your job is to create a consistent coffee puck.

Complete the setup with:

Dosing funnel

🌀 Duomo WDT tool

🔘 Precision tamper

🧺 VST precision basket

🪞 Bottomless portafilter

⚖️ Espresso scale

A machine cannot correct poor distribution after the portafilter is locked in.

🪞 Bottomless Portafilter

A naked portafilter gives you immediate visual information about extraction.

Look for:

✨ Broad initial saturation

☕ Even development

🎯 A stable central flow

Watch for:

💦 Spraying

⚡ Sudden jets

↔️ Strongly asymmetric flow

These can help identify puck-preparation problems.

And because the Puristika is aimed squarely at the espresso enthusiast, a bottomless portafilter feels especially at home here.

⚙️ The Grinder Matters More Than You Think

Do not spend your complete budget on the espresso machine.

The grinder has an enormous influence on:

🔬 Particle distribution

⚙️ Flow resistance

🍯 Sweetness

✨ Clarity

📊 Repeatability

Interesting partners include:

⚖️ ECM Exacto

ECM's Grind-by-Weight grinder gives you automatic weight-based dosing.

⚖️ Ceado Life WAM

Grind-by-Weight combined with low-retention XB50 blind burrs.

⚖️ Eureka Mignon Libra 65

65 mm flat burrs and Grind-by-Weight.

🧠 Eureka Specialità SMART

Excellent compact espresso workflow with digital grind-position assistance.

⚙️ LELIT Steve PM20

64 mm dedicated flat-burr espresso grinder.

⚖️ CoffeeNose Espresso Recipe

A useful starting point:

🫘 Coffee

18.0 g

💧 Espresso

38–42 g

⏱️ Time

Use roughly 25–30 seconds as an initial diagnostic range rather than a strict rule.

Then taste.

🍋 Sour, thin and fast?

⚙️ Grind finer.

🍫 Dry, bitter and very slow?

⚙️ Grind coarser.

🍯 Sweet, balanced and expressive?

Stop adjusting things.

Enjoy it.

🫘 Perfect Machine for an Espresso Tasting Set

The Puristika almost begs you to compare coffees.

Try a WB.coffee Espresso Tasting Set and explore how different flavour styles behave on the same machine.

Compare:

🍫 Chocolaty

🌰 Nutty

🍮 Caramel

🍓 Fruity

🌸 Floral

🌍 Single origin

Keep your brewing method consistent and let the coffee change.

That's a much more interesting way to learn espresso than endlessly changing equipment.

🌰 CN – Chocolaty & Nutty

Want a sweet and forgiving espresso?

Try:

CN – Chocolaty & Nutty

Our popular specialty blend leans towards:

🍫 Milk chocolate

🌰 Nuts

🍮 Caramel

🍯 Brown sugar

🍰 Fudge

Although many customers love CN with milk, it also makes a beautifully sweet straight espresso.

🍮 VC – Vanilla & Caramel

For an approachable, smooth espresso:

VC – Vanilla & Caramel

Think:

🌼 Vanilla

🍮 Caramel

🍯 Sweetness

☕ Round body

A lovely coffee for learning the Puristika before moving into brighter single origins.

🍓 FJ – Fruity & Juicy

Want to explore more acidity and fruit?

Try:

FJ – Fruity & Juicy

The Puristika's PID becomes particularly useful when moving from a chocolate-driven blend towards brighter modern espresso.

Experiment with:

🌡️ Temperature

⚙️ Grind

💧 Ratio

and taste how the fruit expression changes.

🌍 Single-Origin Espresso

Then give the Puristika something more demanding.

Ask us for a current recommendation or explore coffees such as:

🍓 Kenya Currant Crush

🌸 Ethiopia Guji Dimtu

💎 Guatemala Geisha – Finca Inferno

🍍 Pineapple Express

🍊 Fernando Díaz Orange Bourbon

A dedicated espresso machine with temperature control is an excellent platform for comparing how origin, variety and processing change the cup.

💧 Use Good Water

ECM recommends filtered water for espresso preparation and regular machine maintenance.

That's important for two reasons.

☕ Flavour

Water changes:

🍋 Acidity

🍯 Sweetness

👅 Mouthfeel

🌸 Aroma

🛡️ Machine Protection

Poor water can contribute to:

🪨 Scale

💧 Restricted waterways

🔥 Boiler problems

🔧 Expensive maintenance

Do not confuse:

soft water

with:

good coffee water.

The goal is an appropriate mineral composition for both extraction and machine protection.

Ask WB.coffee if you're unsure what to use with your Puristika.

🧼 Cleaning & Maintenance

ECM currently recommends regular brew-group cleaning and maintenance according to machine use. The manufacturer states that its machines should be serviced according to usage and operating time.

Complete your cleaning setup with:

⬛ Blind basket

🧼 Cafetto EVO espresso cleaner

🪥 Proper group-head brush

🚿 Group-head spray brush

🧲 Puck screen

Remember

A puck screen keeps the shower screen cleaner.

It does not eliminate proper backflushing.

Fresh coffee oils taste fantastic.

Old coffee oils don't.

📦 Included in the Box

ECM currently lists:

  • ☕ 1 double-spout portafilter
  • 🧺 1 × 7 g single basket
  • 🧺 1 × 14 g double basket
  • ⬛ 1 blind basket
  • 🔘 1 tamper
  • 💧 Glass water tank with lid
  • 🔗 2 connecting hoses
  • 🔗 1 silicone hose
  • ⚡ Power cable
  • 🪥 Cleaning brush
  • 📖 User manual

✅ Perfect For

The ECM Puristika is particularly suitable for:

✔️ Dedicated espresso drinkers

✔️ Espresso purists

✔️ Single-origin espresso enthusiasts

✔️ Small kitchens

✔️ Design-conscious coffee setups

✔️ People who never steam milk

✔️ Users who already own a separate milk steamer

✔️ Coffee geeks wanting PID temperature control

✔️ People who value repairable traditional espresso equipment

✔️ Anyone who wants a serious machine without unnecessary bulk

🥛 But What If I Occasionally Want Cappuccino?

Then you have two choices.

Option 1 – Buy a different espresso machine

If you regularly make several milk drinks, choose an HX or dual-boiler machine.

That is what those machines are designed for.

Option 2 – Keep espresso and milk separate

Pair the Puristika with a standalone milk steamer such as the:

Dualit Cino™

This is actually an interesting modular approach.

☕ Puristika handles espresso.

🥛 Cino handles milk.

If the milk steamer isn't needed, you don't heat it.

And if one appliance requires servicing, the other still functions.

For some households this makes more sense than maintaining a large dual-boiler machine.

🎓 Espresso Essentials for the Home Barista

❤️ Why We Like It at WB.coffee

The Puristika is refreshingly uncompromising.

Most manufacturers seem determined to add:

screens,

steam systems,

hot-water taps,

more boilers,

more buttons,

and increasingly complicated menus.

ECM did something different.

They removed everything that isn't essential for someone who simply wants to make espresso.

We like that.

You still get:

🌡️ PID

📈 Pressure information

🔧 Adjustable brewing pressure

🔥 A stainless boiler

☕ A serious ECM group

💧 A generous water reservoir

⚡ Fast Heat-Up

but you're not paying for a steam system that you never use.

And the external glass reservoir isn't merely visually interesting—it also contributes to the extremely narrow 19.5 cm machine body.

For the person who drinks cappuccino every morning?

We'd recommend another machine.

For somebody who says:

“I just want really good espresso.”

the Puristika suddenly makes enormous sense.

CoffeeNose verdict 👃

Spend the money you save on the steam system on:

⚙️ a better grinder,

💧 better water,

and

🫘 better coffee.

That will probably improve your espresso far more.

Important Ordering, Warranty & Service Information

🎨 Custom RAL Colours

Want your espresso machine in a colour that matches your kitchen, interior or company branding?

WB.coffee can arrange professional spray painting in virtually any RAL colour for an additional fee.

Custom colours are made to order and therefore require additional preparation and delivery time. Contact us with your preferred RAL code for a quotation before ordering.

📦 Colour Availability & Payment

Not every standard factory colour is always available for immediate shipment.

Stock and delivery times can change, particularly for less common colours and special editions.

Please do not make a bank transfer until your order has been completed and we have confirmed the configuration, colour, availability and final price.

If your preferred colour is temporarily unavailable, we can discuss:

  • Another factory colour
  • Expected delivery time
  • A custom RAL finish
  • Alternative configurations

💧 Water Filtration & Maintenance Are Essential

Professional espresso equipment requires proper water treatment and regular maintenance.

Using water outside the manufacturer's specifications can cause:

  • Scale build-up
  • Corrosion
  • Restricted flow
  • Boiler and valve damage
  • Reduced temperature stability
  • Expensive repairs

A suitable water filter or water-treatment system must therefore be installed and maintained, and the espresso machine must receive the prescribed regular cleaning and maintenance.

Correct water treatment and maintenance are also important for maintaining warranty coverage. Damage caused by unsuitable water, scale, neglected cleaning or insufficient maintenance may fall outside the manufacturer's warranty conditions.

WB.coffee can help select the correct filtration solution based on your local water quality and expected consumption.

For higher-volume installations, we can also advise on larger-capacity filtration systems with a lower cost per litre and less cartridge waste.

❤️ Why Buy Your Espresso Machine from WB.coffee?

Installation requirements and pricing depend on the machine, existing plumbing and location, so please contact us for a quotation.

👃 The WB.coffee Approach

We would rather help you build the right coffee setup than simply sell you the most expensive machine.

The espresso machine is only one part of the system:

water → grinder → coffee → puck preparation → machine → maintenance → barista → cup

Get those elements working together and an excellent machine becomes an excellent coffee experience.

That combination of service, knowledge, specialty coffee and long-term support is what you are buying when you choose WB.coffee.

An espresso machine is like a car or a bycicle. Would you buy it online without a test drive? At WB.coffee we provide dedicated personal shopping (read more below at the Try before you Buy section). We can advice you on which machine and set up suits you best. Do you use it for your morning espresso or are you brewing dozens of latte's for family and friends every weekend? There are many factors to consider and what seems fancy and goodlooking might not be the best option for you.

While an espresso machine is essential, it’s only the first step; to enjoy flavorful coffee, you require a reliable grinder for freshly ground beans, high-quality coffee beans, a spotless machine, and suitable filters. Therefore, it's wise to buy an espresso from a specialist.

Questions we will ask you:

  • How do you currently make coffee?
  • How many coffees do you want to make?
  • What kind of coffees do you drink (with or without milk)
  • Do you alreayd have a grinder?
  • How much space do you have on your (kitchen) counter?
  • What price category are you looking at?
  • What beans do you (intend to) use?

We are dedicated to offering you support with maintenance and cleaning, brewing advice, troubleshooting, choosing high-quality beans, and more. Whenever you need a replacement part or have any warranty issues, we are here to assist you.

What to consider when buying an espresso machine

we help you make the right choice

Your eye is often caugth by the beauty of a machine. How will it look in my kitchen? Of course esthetics are important and many great machines come in different customization (colors, wood, chrome, copper, etc). The machine must howerver, first and foremoste, suit your needs!

Sustainability

A machine with a well insulated boiler in the right size/capacity will heat up fast, whilst using minimal energy. Size matters and it all depends on your drinking habits.

Repairability

Not all brands are build for repairs. Are spare parts available? Is support available?

Upgrades

With our tasty specialty coffee beans you are likely to get addicted. Maybe you will want to extract more flavor and upgrade your shower screen, portafilter basket, maybe even a naked portafilter? Pressure profiling, shot timer, pressure gauge. Many brands and machines are suitable for (custom) upgrades.

Some brands are on purpose not suitable for universal parts and tools, so they can sell their own overpriced parts instead.

Health

Lower end, cheaper machines often use plastic parts. With PFAS and microplastics this is not such a good idea. Oils and heat let plastic migrate into your drink. With some brands this is also the case with their more expensive machines from around 1000 euro!

Let us guide you whilst tasting how great coffee should be!

Add-on products

An espresso machine is just one essential part you need to brew great espresso at home. To get a proper start you need:

  • espresso grinder
  • Good, fresh beans (you won't find those in the supermarket!)
  • proper tamper (often a bad to mediocre one is added by the manufactorer)
  • tamping mat
  • espresso scale
  • blind filter grouphead brush (often a bad to mediocre one is added by the manufactorer - you will burn your hands with those!)
  • coffee oil cleaner

Optional but recommended

  • barista workshop / course
  • dosing cup
  • shot glass
  • milk pitcher(s)
  • milk cleaner
  • puck screen

There are a lot of extra tools and upgrades we can reccomend, you can every time treat yourself to a gadget when ordering coffee! Don't feel shy to ask for reccomendations. Of course you can go and try and find all these items seperately in some vague online store or big e-commerce platform. Big chance you will end up with some chinese knock-off and get 10 seperate packages. Not very sustainable and not very economical.

Just add coffee and gadgets you want to your cart and we can apply discount for you. Just select bank transfer as payment option and we can manually apply discount and make you a non-binding offer.

We do offer best price guarantee for most brands and products.

E61 machine maintenance & repairs

when you can use a bit of help

Don't have the right tools? No time? No experience? Looking for an upgrade

No problem. Your E61 is build to last for years. You can repair everything with spare parts available. You can replace parts and even do upgrades such as installing pressure gauges and temperature sensors.

We provide the following services:

  • Descaling the boiler and machine
  • Deep cleaning grouphead
  • Replacing parts
  • Upgrading parts
  • Repairs

Small repairs we can do inhouse in Weesp. For big or complicated repairs we sometimes advice to send your machine to a trusted third party workshop.

If you bought your machine elsewhere and it is under warranty check it first. Generally speaking warranty is mostly void if you don't use a proper water filter, don't do proper backflushing, cleaning and occasional deep cleaning. Even with water filter periodic descaling is required. If a default or failure falls under factory warranty it will usually occur during the first weeks or months of machine usage. Most of the issues that occur later are usually normal maintenance (like replacing the window wipes and tires of a car).

We can usually give a quotation after short evaluation. It can however happen that another problem occurs. In this case we will contact you.

We will ask you for a pre-payment for (custom) parts and labor.

A first investigation /analysis usually takes 10-15min and costs 20 euro. We will deduct this from your final bill. When you decide not to proceed or we cannot establish the problem (we decide not to proceed) we will give you a 20 euro credit towards coffee beans.
