Magnetic Puck Screen 58.5 mm – 0.2 mm
🧲 More Even Extraction. Cleaner Group Head. No Burned Fingers.
The Magnetic Puck Screen 58.5 mm – 0.2 mm is a simple but clever espresso upgrade designed to improve water distribution across the coffee bed while making everyday puck-screen use much easier.
The ultra-thin stainless-steel screen sits directly on top of the coffee puck and helps distribute brewing water more evenly during pre-infusion and extraction.
But the real advantage?
🧲 It is magnetic.
After brewing, simply lift the puck screen out before knocking the coffee puck into your knock box.
No more:
🔥 Burning your fingers
🗑️ Losing puck screens in the knock box
🥄 Digging through wet coffee grounds
😅 Trying to shake a hot screen loose from the basket
A small upgrade that makes the complete espresso workflow cleaner, faster and more enjoyable.

🧲 Magnetic = Much Better Daily Workflow
Traditional puck screens work well—but removing them can be annoying.
Immediately after extraction, the screen is:
🔥 Hot
💧 Wet
☕ Covered in coffee residue
Knock the portafilter immediately and the puck screen often disappears into the knock box along with the coffee puck.
The magnetic design solves that.
Lift the screen out first, then knock out the coffee.
The advantages
✅ Faster puck removal
✅ No burned fingertips
✅ Less risk of damaging the screen
✅ No searching through the knock box
✅ Easier rinsing between shots
✅ More convenient in professional workflows
If you use a puck screen every day, this small detail makes a surprisingly large difference.
💧 More Uniform Water Distribution
During espresso brewing, water enters the coffee bed from the shower screen above.
Without a puck screen, the first contact between water and coffee can be influenced by:
💧 Shower-screen geometry
🔩 Centre screws
☕ Coffee-bed preparation
🌀 Localised high-flow areas
📐 Headspace between coffee and shower screen
The puck screen creates an additional diffusion layer between the shower screen and coffee.
This helps distribute water across a wider area before it reaches the puck.
Potential benefits include:
✅ More even saturation
✅ More uniform pre-infusion
✅ Reduced localised erosion
✅ Greater extraction stability
✅ Lower risk of obvious channel formation
✅ More repeatable espresso preparation
A puck screen cannot repair poor distribution underneath the coffee.
You still need good grinding, WDT, levelling and tamping.
Think of it as the final layer of preparation, not a replacement for everything below it.
👃 CoffeeNose Tip – Especially Useful During Pre-Infusion
One of the reasons we like puck screens is their effect during the first seconds of brewing.
Pre-infusion is about wetting the coffee bed as evenly as possible before full brewing pressure develops.
A puck screen helps spread that initial water across the surface instead of allowing individual jets to hit the coffee directly.
This can be particularly useful with:
🌸 Light-roasted specialty coffee
⚙️ Fine espresso settings
💧 Longer pre-infusion
🧺 High-flow precision baskets
☕ Modern high-extraction recipes
The result can be a calmer, more predictable start to the extraction.
And a calm start often makes the rest of the shot easier to control.
🧼 Helps Keep the Shower Screen Cleaner
The screen also acts as a physical barrier between the coffee puck and the espresso machine's shower screen.
Without one, expanding coffee can touch the shower screen during extraction and leave behind:
☕ Coffee particles
🟤 Oils
🧼 Wet grounds
👃 Residue that eventually becomes rancid
A puck screen catches much of this contamination before it reaches the machine.
That means the shower screen usually stays visibly cleaner.
💧 Less Flushing = Less Water & Electricity
This is especially relevant for the home barista.
In a café, hundreds of shots justify regular flushing and daily backflushing.
At home, you may prepare only:
☕ 2
☕☕ 4
or perhaps
☕☕☕ 6 espressos per day.
Constantly flushing large quantities of hot water is wasteful.
Keeping the shower screen cleaner with a puck screen can reduce how much rinsing is required between shots.
Potential benefits:
💧 Less hot water wasted
⚡ Less energy used reheating replacement water
🧼 Cleaner group head
♻️ More efficient home workflow
Important
A puck screen does not eliminate the need for proper machine cleaning.
It simply reduces the amount of coffee residue reaching the shower screen.
🧼 Clean the Puck Screen Too
The puck screen protects your machine—but that means the coffee oils end up on the screen itself.
If those oils are allowed to accumulate, they oxidise and become rancid.
That can influence the flavour of the next espresso.
👃 CoffeeNose recommendation
After use:
- 🧲 Remove the puck screen.
- 💧 Rinse it thoroughly under hot water.
- 🧺 Rinse the filter basket at the same time.
- 🧼 Inspect for visible coffee oils.
- ✨ Deep-clean periodically with a suitable espresso oil cleaner.
A clean puck screen should not smell strongly of yesterday's coffee.
If it does:
clean it.
🧼 Cafetto EVO
Use Cafetto EVO Espresso Cleaner when the puck screen, basket or espresso components develop coffee-oil residue.
EVO helps remove:
☕ Coffee oils
🟤 Brown residue
👃 Rancid aromas
🧼 Baked-on contamination
Practical cleaning
Soak compatible stainless-steel puck screens and baskets according to the cleaner instructions.
Then rinse them extremely thoroughly with clean water before returning them to the espresso machine.
Never leave detergent residue on equipment that contacts coffee.
Clean tools help fresh WB.coffee taste fresh.
🔩 304 Stainless Steel
The screen is manufactured from food-contact-quality 304 stainless steel.
This provides:
✅ Good corrosion resistance
✅ High-temperature resistance
✅ Mechanical durability
✅ Reusable construction
✅ Neutral use in espresso preparation
The screen can safely handle the temperature and pressure encountered during normal espresso brewing when used correctly.
📐 Ultra-Thin 0.2 mm Design
This version is only:
0.2 mm thick
That matters because every puck screen occupies some of the headspace above the coffee.
A thicker screen may require:
⚖️ A smaller coffee dose
or
🧺 A deeper basket
to prevent contact with the shower-screen screw.
The ultra-thin 0.2 mm profile minimises the amount of space taken up above the coffee bed.
This makes it particularly useful for baskets that are already relatively full.
📏 58.5 mm Competition Basket Size
This model is designed for:
58.5 mm precision / competition-style espresso baskets
It works well with many common 58 mm group-head systems and precision baskets, including compatible products from:
🧺 IMS
🧺 VST
☕ La Marzocco
☕ ECM
☕ Profitec
☕ Rocket
☕ Lelit 58 mm systems
☕ Many E61 machines
Important
The nominal portafilter size may be called 58 mm, while the actual internal basket diameter is closer to 58.5 mm.
Always check the basket dimensions rather than relying only on the espresso machine's marketing size.
⚠️ Check Your Shower-Screen Screw
Some espresso machines have a relatively thick central screw projecting below the shower screen.
If the puck screen can be pushed against this screw when the portafilter is locked into the machine.
That can:
❌ Deform the puck screen
❌ Damage the coffee puck before extraction
❌ Reduce headspace too much
❌ Mark the screen
❌ Create uneven compression
How to check
Prepare the portafilter normally.
Place the screen on top.
Lock the portafilter in gently.
Remove it again without brewing.
Inspect for an obvious screw indentation.
If you see a strong mark
Use:
🧺 A deeper basket
⚖️ A slightly lower dose
📐 A thinner puck screen
or
🔩 A more flush shower-screen screw where appropriate
Never force an overfilled portafilter into the group.
🧺 Match the Screen to the Basket, Not Just the Machine
Puck-screen fit depends primarily on the inside diameter of the basket.
This 58.5 mm version is intended for competition-style baskets.
Other common sizes include:
51 mm
For selected smaller domestic espresso systems.
53 mm
For selected compact and Breville/Sage-style systems depending on basket geometry.
58.5 mm
For professional and prosumer 58 mm systems using precision baskets.
Thickness options
Depending on configuration, screens may be available in:
Thinner screens preserve more headspace.
Thicker screens can feel more rigid but require more room above the puck.
♻️ Reusable & Lower Waste
Unlike disposable paper puck filters, the stainless-steel puck screen can be reused many times.
Rinse.
Clean.
Reuse.
That means:
♻️ Less disposable material
🗑️ Less waste per espresso
💶 Very low cost per shot
☕ Consistent everyday workflow
A well-maintained puck screen can remain part of your espresso kit for a long time.

👃 CoffeeNose Tip – A Puck Screen Is Not a Channeling Cure
A puck screen can improve the top of the extraction.
But channeling usually begins deeper inside the coffee bed.
Before adding the screen, make sure you already have:
⚙️ A capable espresso grinder
⚖️ Repeatable dosing
⭕ A dosing funnel
🌀 Good WDT distribution
🔘 Level tamping
🧺 A properly sized basket
Then add the puck screen.
Think:
Grinder
creates the particles.
WDT
distributes them.
Tamper
creates an even coffee bed.
Puck screen
helps distribute water onto that bed.
Every step matters.

❤️ Why We Like It at WB.coffee
We already like puck screens.
They help create a more even start to extraction and keep the machine's shower screen noticeably cleaner.
But the magnetic version fixes the most annoying part of using one:
removing the hot screen after the shot.
No more shaking.
No more burned fingertips.
No more accidentally launching a €10–20 screen into a knock box full of wet coffee.
For the home barista, we particularly appreciate the cleaner shower screen.
With only a few shots per day, daily backflushing simply doesn't make sense. Reducing the amount of coffee reaching the group means less unnecessary flushing—and therefore less:
💧 Water
⚡ Electricity
🧼 Cleaning product
That is good for your machine, your workflow and the environment.
Just remember:
the puck screen itself now needs cleaning too.
Rinse it together with your basket after use, and periodically remove coffee oils with a proper espresso cleaner.
A dirty puck screen sitting on top of freshly roasted specialty coffee defeats the entire purpose.
Clean grinder.
Clean basket.
Clean puck screen.
Clean machine.
Then let the coffee do the talking. 👃☕
