Lelit Mara X3

E61 with Flow Control HX

LELIT MaraX3 – Pagaia Flow Control HX Espresso Machine

🌊 Take Control. Shape the Flow.

The LELIT MaraX3 takes one of the most successful compact heat-exchanger concepts and gives the home barista something genuinely new:

real-time electronic flow control.

At the heart of MaraX3 is Pagaia, LELIT’s patented electronic flow-control system. The ergonomic lever lets you dynamically influence water flow during extraction, giving you another powerful variable with which to shape espresso.

Combine that with:

đŸŒĄïž LELIT’s advanced Dual Probe HX temperature-management system

💧 Mechanical pre-infusion in the L58E group

🌊 Pagaia electronic flow control

🔇 New silent pump

đŸ”„ 1.8 L stainless-steel heat-exchanger boiler

đŸ„› Steam Boost and a new 3-hole steam tip

đŸ§ș Full LELIT58 barista-tool compatibility

đŸȘ” Premium wooden details

✹ A completely renewed design language

and MaraX3 becomes much more than a facelift.

It remains recognisably Mara—but now gives the enthusiast significantly more authority over how the espresso extracts, not merely which temperature is selected.

🌊 Pagaia – The Big MaraX3 Upgrade

The feature that really separates the MaraX3 from the previous MaraX is Pagaia.

LELIT describes Pagaia as its patented electronic flow-control system, designed to give the user precise, real-time control over extraction from the pump through to the L58E group.

Instead of treating espresso extraction as simply:

pump ON → full flow → pump OFF

you can influence the way water reaches the coffee.

That opens the door to recipes such as:

🌾 Gentle light-roast pre-infusion

Begin with reduced flow.

Allow the coffee puck to saturate gradually.

Then increase flow once the bed is evenly wet.

đŸ« Traditional espresso

Move quickly towards normal flow for a more conventional extraction.

🍓 Declining-flow extraction

Start with stronger flow and gradually reduce it later in the shot as the coffee puck becomes increasingly permeable.

đŸ§Ș Experimental profiles

Change flow deliberately during extraction and taste what happens.

This is exactly the kind of control that turns espresso from:

“press the button and hope”

into:

“change one variable and taste the difference.”

💧 Flow Control Is Not the Same as Pressure Control

This distinction matters.

Pagaia is fundamentally a flow-control system.

You are manipulating how water is delivered through the coffee bed.

Pressure will react to:

⚙ Grind size

⚖ Dose

đŸ§ș Basket resistance

🌀 Puck preparation

💧 Selected flow

☕ Changes occurring inside the puck

but Pagaia should not simply be described as a traditional pressure-profiling paddle.

Flow and pressure interact.

They are not interchangeable.

That distinction makes the MaraX3 particularly interesting for anyone who wants to learn more about espresso extraction rather than merely chase a number on the manometer.

👃 CoffeeNose – Why Flow Control Gets Interesting

During the beginning of an extraction, the dry coffee puck is fragile.

Immediately hitting it with maximum water flow can encourage small differences in density to develop into preferential pathways.

Or: channeling!

With Pagaia, you can begin more gently.

The idea is:

💧 Wet the puck

đŸ«§ Allow gases to escape

🌀 Encourage even saturation

âŹ†ïž Then increase flow

This can be particularly useful with:

🌾 Light roasts

🌍 Dense high-altitude coffees

đŸ«˜ Very fresh coffee

đŸ§ș High-flow precision baskets

⚙ Fine grind settings

💎 Single-origin espresso

You do not need flow profiling for every coffee.

But being able to use it when the coffee benefits from it is a serious upgrade.

☕ L58E Group – Familiar Professional Format

The MaraX3 retains LELIT’s L58E group, compatible with the broad LELIT58 ecosystem and using mechanical pre-infusion.

That means access to:

đŸ§ș IMS and VST precision baskets

đŸ§Č 58.5 mm puck screens

đŸȘž Bottomless portafilters

🔘 Precision tampers

⭕ Dosing funnels

🌀 WDT tools

⚖ Modern 58 mm espresso workflows

This is especially attractive if you already own LELIT58 accessories.

đŸŒĄïž Advanced Dual Probe HX System

The traditional challenge with a heat-exchanger machine is temperature management.

Classic HX machines can become very hot while sitting idle, sometimes requiring cooling flushes before brewing.

MaraX was already unusual because LELIT developed its Dual Probe HX system with thermosyphon circulation specifically to manage extraction temperature more actively and avoid the overheating behaviour associated with traditional HX designs. The MaraX3 retains and advances this architecture.

You get the benefits of the HX concept:

☕ Brewing espresso

+

đŸ„› Strong steam availability

without having to manage the machine exactly like a traditional old-school heat exchanger.

đŸŒĄïž Warm – Hot – Extra Hot

Rather than demanding that every home barista enter an exact PID number, MaraX3 retains three practical temperature ranges:

đŸ”” Warm

Useful as a starting point for:

đŸ”„ Darker roasts

đŸ« Traditional espresso

🌰 Lower-acidity coffees

🟠 Hot

A versatile everyday setting for:

☕ Medium roasts

🍼 Espresso blends

🍓 Modern espresso

🔮 Extra Hot

Useful when working with:

🌾 Light roasts

⛰ Dense high-altitude coffees

💎 More demanding specialty espresso

LELIT officially retains the Warm / Hot / Extra Hot selection system on MaraX3.

👃 CoffeeNose Tip

Don't automatically assume:

light roast = hottest setting.

Start with a sensible temperature.

Taste.

Then adjust.

Temperature is a flavour variable.

☕ Xmode Coffee or Xmode Steam

The Mara concept lets you choose how the HX system prioritises its work via:

☕ Xmode Coffee

or

đŸ„› Xmode Steam

LELIT retains both modes on MaraX3.

This makes the machine adaptable to how you actually drink coffee.

Mostly straight espresso?

Prioritise the coffee workflow.

Making several cappuccinos and flat whites?

Choose the mode that better supports milk-drink preparation.

This dual personality is one of the reasons Mara has always been such an appealing compact HX machine.

đŸ”„ Steam Boost

MaraX3 also retains Steam Boost, while the redesigned steam system now uses a 3-hole nozzle that LELIT says provides more effective steam for faster, more professional milk texturing.

The multidirectional steam wand is anti-burn / cool-touch oriented and paired with professional spring-return steam controls.

Ideal for:

☕ Cappuccino

đŸ€Ž Flat white

đŸ„› Latte

đŸ« Mocha

đŸŒ± Barista oat drinks

đŸ„› Three-Hole Steam Tip

Three steam outlets provide a useful balance between:

đŸ”„ Power

🌀 Milk circulation

🎹 Control

Compared with a very aggressive high-flow commercial tip, it remains manageable for the home barista while giving enough steam distribution to create a strong whirlpool.

The goal is not simply to heat milk quickly.

You want:

✹ Fine microfoam

🌀 Good circulation

đŸ„› Integrated texture

🎹 Pourable latte-art milk

🔇 New Silent Pump

LELIT specifies a new silent pump for MaraX3.

That matters more than many specification sheets suggest.

Espresso machines are often used:

🌅 Early in the morning

🌙 Late in the evening

🏠 In open-plan kitchens

đŸ‘šâ€đŸ‘©â€đŸ‘§ Around sleeping family members

Quieter operation makes a premium home machine more pleasant to live with every day.

📈 New Double Manometer

The redesigned double manometer displays:

💧 Pump / extraction pressure

đŸ”„ Steam-boiler pressure

in one visual instrument.

This lets you monitor both sides of the HX system while brewing.

Remember:

9 bar does not automatically mean good espresso.

Pressure is diagnostic information.

You still need to evaluate:

⚖ Dose

💧 Yield

⏱ Time

🌊 Flow

👅 Taste

💧 Active Reserve Mode

Running out of tank water halfway through an espresso is frustrating.

The MaraX3 retains LELIT’s Active Reserve Mode, together with indicators for low water or a missing tank.

A small feature.

A very useful one.

✹ A New LELIT Design Language

MaraX3 introduces a noticeably different visual direction.

LELIT highlights:

✹ Polished stainless-steel side ribbon

đŸȘ” Gem-shaped wooden controls

đŸȘ” Wooden Pagaia lever

đŸȘ” Matching wooden feet

đŸ§Œ Redesigned wire-grate drip tray

☕ Mug-friendly clearance

đŸŽ›ïž More tactile control surfaces

as part of its new design language.

It feels less like an industrial box decorated with wooden knobs and more like one coherent product.

đŸȘ” Wood Finish Depends on Machine Colour

Brushed Stainless Steel

The official stainless-steel version uses:

Smoked Oak

for:

đŸȘ” Steam and hot-water knobs

🌊 Pagaia

☕ Brew lever

đŸŠ¶ High feet

🔘 Tamper handle

☕ Portafilter handle

Black / White

LELIT’s current technical material specifies Zebrano wood for the black and white versions.

Natural wood means every machine may show slightly different grain and tone.

We consider that a feature rather than a defect.

đŸ§Œ Redesigned Drip Tray

MaraX3 receives a newly shaped drip tray with a wire grate, specifically redesigned to make cleaning easier. LELIT also added a dedicated discharge nozzle positioned above the tray.

Again, not headline espresso technology—but exactly the sort of everyday usability improvement that becomes important after six months of ownership.

🆚 MaraX vs MaraX3 – What Actually Changed?

The MaraX3 does not throw away the Mara concept.

It builds on it.

The short version?

The original MaraX solved a lot of the annoying thermal behaviour of the classic HX machine.

MaraX3 adds extraction control.

That is the meaningful difference.

đŸ§ș Serious Equipment Included

LELIT gives the MaraX3 a surprisingly complete accessory package.

Included are:

☕ LELIT58 dual-spout portafilter with Coffee Slide

đŸȘ” Matching premium wooden handle

đŸ§ș 9–11 g single IMS-developed basket

đŸ§ș 14–18 g double IMS-developed basket

đŸ§ș 18–21 g double IMS-developed basket

⬛ IMS-developed blind basket

🔘 LELIT58 stainless-steel tamper with matching wooden handle

☕ Cup rack

💧 70 L water-softening filter

đŸ§Œ Initial cleaning kit

đŸȘ„ Nylon group-head brush

⭕ Spare L58E group gasket

That means you don't immediately have to replace half the accessories before making serious espresso.

We appreciate that.

đŸȘž LELIT58 Bottomless Portafilter

Want to actually see what Pagaia is doing to your extraction?

Add the LELIT58 Bottomless Portafilter with walnut handle and IMS-developed 18–21 g basket.

A naked portafilter lets you observe:

💧 Initial saturation

đŸ«§ Pre-infusion

🌊 Changes in flow

🌀 Channeling

☕ How the extraction converges

Flow control becomes much more educational when you can see the underside of the basket.

đŸ§Č Magnetic Puck Screen 58.5 mm

A 0.2 mm magnetic puck screen pairs extremely well with the precision-basket setup.

It can help:

💧 Distribute initial water

đŸ«§ Support more uniform pre-infusion

đŸ§Œ Keep the L58E shower screen cleaner

♻ Reduce unnecessary flushing

And the magnetic removal means:

đŸ”„ No burned fingers

đŸ—‘ïž No lost screen in the knock box

Particularly useful when experimenting with longer, gentler Pagaia pre-infusions.

⚙ Don't Forget the Grinder

Flow profiling will not rescue bad grinding.

If the particle distribution is poor or the dose changes every shot, adding another extraction variable can actually make diagnosis harder.

Excellent partners include:

⚖ Ceado Life WAM

Grind-by-Weight plus low-retention XB50 blind burrs.

⚖ Eureka Mignon Libra 65

65 mm all-purpose flat burrs with Grind-by-Weight.

🧠 Eureka Mignon Specialità SMART

Digital burr-gap information and excellent home espresso workflow.

⚙ LELIT Steve PM20

64 mm flat-burr dedicated espresso grinder.

Matches the Mara design and color scheme!

👃 CoffeeNose Starting Recipe – Learn Pagaia Gradually

Do not begin by moving the lever wildly throughout every espresso.

Start simple.

đŸ«˜ Dose

18 g

💧 Yield

38–42 g

đŸŒĄïž Temperature

Start with Hot

🌊 Flow

Use a gentle initial flow for several seconds.

Allow the puck to saturate.

Then transition smoothly towards normal flow.

Watch:

👀 Bottomless-portafilter behaviour

📈 Pressure response

⚖ Beverage yield

⏱ Time

👅 Flavour

Then compare against the same coffee brewed with a more conventional full-flow extraction.

Ask:

Did acidity become softer?

Did sweetness increase?

Did the finish become cleaner?

Did body decrease?

Did I actually improve the coffee—or just make the recipe more complicated?

That last question is important.

đŸ«˜ Coffee Pairing – Learn with a Blend First

Before attacking a €30 bag of Geisha, learn the machine with a forgiving blend.

🌰 CN – Chocolaty & Nutty

Excellent for:

đŸ« Chocolate

🌰 Nutty sweetness

🍼 Caramel

đŸ„› Milk drinks

🍼 VC – Vanilla & Caramel

Smooth, sweet and approachable.

Excellent for:

☕ Espresso

đŸ€Ž Flat white

đŸ„› Cappuccino

🍓 FJ – Fruity & Juicy

Then begin exploring what Pagaia can do with a brighter modern espresso.

Look for changes in:

🍓 Fruit

🍋 Acidity

🍯 Sweetness

✹ Clarity

🌍 Then Move to Single-Origin Espresso

Pagaia becomes especially entertaining with coffees that respond strongly to changes in pre-infusion and flow.

Try:

🍓 Kenya Currant Crush

💎 Guatemala Geisha – Finca Inferno

🌾 Ethiopia Guji Dimtu

🍍 Pineapple Express

🍊 Fernando Díaz Orange Bourbon

đŸ§Ș Changing WB.coffee microlots

Rather than assuming one profile suits everything, use the machine to discover what each coffee wants.

💧 Water Matters

The MaraX3 includes a 70 L water-softening filter, double the capacity supplied with the earlier MaraX specification.

But remember:

A softening filter is primarily there to manage scale risk.

It does not automatically create ideal coffee water forever.

Water influences:

🍋 Acidity

🍯 Sweetness

👅 Mouthfeel

🌾 Aromatics

đŸȘš Scale formation

For hard-water areas or heavier machine use, ask us about a larger-capacity filtration solution with lower cost per litre and less cartridge waste.

đŸ§Œ Keep the MaraX3 Clean

The box already includes:

⬛ Blind basket

đŸ§Œ Initial cleaning products

đŸȘ„ Group brush

so use them.

For ongoing maintenance we recommend:

đŸ§Œ Cafetto EVO – coffee-oil cleaning

đŸ„› Cafetto MFC – milk-residue cleaning

💧 Appropriate descaling / water treatment according to machine requirements

đŸ§Č Puck screen to reduce group contamination

Flow control is fun.

Rancid coffee oils are not.

🎓 Espresso Essentials for the Home Barista

A MaraX3 offers far more control than most people initially need.

Learning what to do with that control is the interesting part.

During Espresso Essentials at Amsterdam Coffee Lab in Weesp, explore:

⚙ Grinder adjustment

⚖ Dose and yield

💧 Brew ratio

🌀 Puck preparation

đŸ«§ Pre-infusion

🌊 Flow

📈 Pressure

đŸŒĄïž Temperature

👅 Extraction and flavour

đŸ„› Milk steaming

đŸ§Œ Machine maintenance

đŸ§Ș Barista Masterclass – Go Deeper with Pagaia

Already comfortable dialing in espresso?

The MaraX3 deserves experimentation with:

🌊 Different flow profiles

đŸ«§ Extended pre-infusion

📉 Declining flow

đŸ§ș Basket geometry

đŸ§Č Puck screens

đŸŒĄïž Temperature changes

💧 Water chemistry

🍓 Single-origin recipes

👅 Body versus clarity

This is where Pagaia becomes more than an impressive lever on the front of the machine.

It becomes a sensory tool.

❀ Why We Like the MaraX3 at WB.coffee

The original MaraX was already clever because it addressed one of the fundamental weaknesses of the traditional home HX machine:

temperature management.

MaraX3 retains that idea and adds something we find much more exciting than another screen or another menu:

control over flow.

And LELIT has implemented it electronically rather than simply bolting a conventional manual needle valve onto the group.

That gives the MaraX3 an interesting position.

It remains:

🏠 Compact

đŸ„› Excellent for milk drinks

đŸ”„ A heat exchanger

🔇 Relatively quiet

☕ Familiar to operate

but it can now also become:

🌊 A flow-control machine

đŸ§Ș An extraction laboratory

🌾 A serious light-roast espresso platform

We also appreciate that LELIT didn't make the new version depend on a large touchscreen.

You still interact physically with:

☕ A brew lever

🌊 Pagaia

đŸȘ” Proper knobs

📈 A real manometer

That's appropriate for an espresso machine.

And then there is the new design.

The side ribbon, wooden feet, gem-shaped controls, matching portafilter and tamper make MaraX3 feel much more cohesive than its predecessor. LELIT explicitly presents these details as part of its new design language.

For somebody who wants:

espresso control approaching enthusiast dual-boiler territory, strong milk performance, and a machine that doesn't dominate the entire kitchen, the MaraX3 is a seriously interesting proposition.

CoffeeNose verdict 👃

The exciting part is not that Pagaia gives you another thing to adjust.

It gives you another thing to taste.

Change the flow.

Keep everything else constant.

Taste again.

That's how espresso gets interesting.

Make an oppointment

What to consider when buying an espresso machine

we help you make the right choice

Your eye is often caugth by the beauty of a machine. How will it look in my kitchen? Of course esthetics are important and many great machines come in different customization (colors, wood, chrome, copper, etc). The machine must howerver, first and foremoste, suit your needs!

Questions we will ask you:

  • How do you currently make coffee?
  • How many coffees do you want to make?
  • What kind of coffees do you drink (with or without milk)
  • Do you alreayd have a grinder?
  • How much space do you have on your (kitchen) counter?
  • What price category are you looking at?
  • What beans do you (intend to) use?

Sustainability

A machine with a well insulated boiler in the right size/capacity will heat up fast, whilst using minimal energy. Size matters and it all depends on your drinking habits.

Repairability

Not all brands are build for repairs. Are spare parts available? Is support available?

Upgrades

With our tasty specialty coffee beans you are likely to get addicted. Maybe you will want to extract more flavor and upgrade your shower screen, portafilter basket, maybe even a naked portafilter? Pressure profiling, shot timer, pressure gauge. Many brands and machines are suitable for (custom) upgrades.

Some brands are on purpose not suitable for universal parts and tools, so they can sell their own overpriced parts instead.

Health

Lower end, cheaper machines often use plastic parts. With PFAS and microplastics this is not such a good idea. Oils and heat let plastic migrate into your drink. With some brands this is also the case with their more expensive machines from around 1000 euro!

Let us guide you whilst tasting how great coffee should be!

An espresso machine is just one essential part you need to brew great espresso at home. To get a proper start you need:

  • espresso grinder
  • Good, fresh beans (you won't find those in the supermarket!)
  • proper tamper (often a bad to mediocre one is added by the manufactorer)
  • tamping mat
  • espresso scale
  • blind filter grouphead brush (often a bad to mediocre one is added by the manufactorer - you will burn your hands with those!)
  • coffee oil cleaner

Optional but recommended

  • barista workshop / course
  • dosing cup
  • shot glass
  • milk pitcher(s)
  • milk cleaner
  • puck screen
  • levelling tool

There are a lot of extra tools and upgrades we can reccomend, you can every time treat yourself to a gadget when ordering coffee! Don't feel shy to ask for reccomendations. Of course you can go and try and find all these items seperately in some vague online store or big e-commerce platform. Big chance you will end up with some chinese knock-off and get 10 seperate packages. Not very sustainable and not very economical.

Just add coffee and gadgets you want to your cart and we can apply discount for you. Just select bank transfer as payment option and we can manually apply discount and make you a non-binding offer.

We do offer best price guarantee for most brands and products.

Every product has been carefully curated by the CoffeeNose 👃!

An espresso machine is like a car or a bycicle. Would you buy it online without a test drive? At WB.coffee we provide dedicated personal shopping (read more below at the Try before you Buy section). We can advice you on which machine and set up suits you best. Do you use it for your morning espresso or are you brewing dozens of latte's for family and friends every weekend? There are many factors to consider and what seems fancy and goodlooking might not be the best option for you.

While an espresso machine is essential, it’s only the first step; to enjoy flavorful coffee, you require a reliable grinder for freshly ground beans, high-quality coffee beans, a spotless machine, and suitable filters. Therefore, it's wise to buy an espresso from a specialist.

We are dedicated to offering you support with maintenance and cleaning, brewing advice, troubleshooting, choosing high-quality beans, and more. Whenever you need a replacement part or have any warranty issues, we are here to assist you.

Rest assured, we can order most brands and machines and we will have it for you in no time.

Tip from the CoffeeNose👃

This machine is energy efficient with it's small insulated 0.25L boiler. It heats up fast so no worries here. Only if you are brewing a lot of espresssi and steaming loads of milk in a short time you might want to choose a dual boiler machine or go for a bigger capacity boiler.

Clean equipment isn’t just about aesthetics or catering to coffee purists. It has far-reaching implications for health, taste, and business operations.

Studies have shown that neglected coffee equipment can harbour harmful bacteria and moulds, especially in components exposed to milk or moisture.

Milk frothers, for instance, can become breeding grounds for pathogens if not properly cleaned. Coffee shops that overlook cleaning risk failing health inspections or, worse, endangering customer health. Use a professional milk cleaner such as Cafetto MFC Organic Milk cleaning powder.

Each session is unique, interactive, and bursting with discovery — like a live culinary performance, but for coffee.

What to Expect

During this exclusive sensory journey, you’ll:

🌾 Experience rare varietals — including legendary coffees like Geisha, and other micro-lot gems from around the world.

🔬 Explore multiple brew styles — from delicate filter brews and bold espressi to the mesmerizing syphon method.

đŸč Enjoy surprising coffee mocktails — creative and refreshing, crafted from the same beans you’ll taste in the lineup.

👃 Engage your senses fully — experience how the aroma, cup shape, color, and even the sound of pouring influence your flavor perception.

A Guided Journey by the CoffeeNose 👃

Led by Wouter Brunia, also known as the CoffeeNose 👃, this tasting is a deep dive into coffee flavor and sensory science.

Like a sommelier presenting fine wines, Wouter will:

  • Brew each coffee live with expert precision
  • Share the stories of each bean — from farm to fermentation
  • Explain flavor notes, processing methods, and varietal differences
  • Help you understand why your favorite coffee tastes the way it does

It’s fun for your brain, taste buds, and nose — and you’ll leave with a new appreciation for what’s in your cup.
